Just to say thank you to a couple of forum members who popped in to our bar in Soi 7/1 recently. They seemed happy with the general approach of our staff and the service they received from our ladies. Glad to see that the floods seem to finally be receeding, good news for everyone I'm sure you will agree. My heart goes out to the plight of the thousands of people who have genuinly suffered recently. Hope things will start to get back to normal now.

ps to indian fellow who is going to thailand to look for thai girls. good luck. i'm kinda in tune why thai girls not too keeen on indians. they just not a bright bunch![/quote]this is ot, but since i see someone blasting you already i find it necessary to support you, and you are in fact supported by at least 15, 000 science ph d's (including a top mit scientist) who have gone on the record now. all of whom question the central premise that global warming (to the extent it is, was, or has or has not occured) is being provably caused by manmade activities. to be fair, it was not a ground up "hoax" from inception, it was more about massive amounts (now in the billions) of grant money infused into a relatively obscure dept of typical universities, where the grant recipients in effect became rock stars fawned over by a compliant major media industry, and just didn't want to get off the stage when the numbers started to go against them, so they "hid the decline" and rigged other numbers (e. g. cherry picking the russian data to favor temp increases) and clearly corrupted the "peer review" process. the core samples will soon put the entire issue to rest, its a matter of several more years of samples. the polar bear issue is classic because the famous photo was cropped (there is land nearby) and in fact the "peer review" was done by the main scientist's girlfriend, this same sicentist now under criminal investigation by the usa govt. the entire nonsense about polar bears all derived from a single observation by a plane overflying the area that noticed 7 or 8 dead polar bears. they never determined the cause of death nor did any real core research beyond that. keep in mind major corporate interests like (former) enron and ge and even duke energy (all seeing the profit potential) have a major vested interest in keeping the illusion going, so that's why its so difficult to have any honest debate on this.

[b]How to understand the flood news right now[/b]

We basically get good news about receding water from the north of Bangkok and the districts further north (Ayutthaja etc.) , and bad news about inundated areas and rising water from the east / south-east / west side of the city.

You must think about a giant lake moving south, covering a huge area, but being not very deep (2-3 m max). That means, that we will get good news about receding water in the northern areas the lake covers, and bad news about rising water in the southern areas the lake moves into. There is only very little slope towards sea level, that makes the movement of the lake quite slow. That's good and bad. It prolongs the flood in some areas, because the water moves on very slowly, but it also gives the canal and pumping system (BMA drainage system) time to pump water into the rivers.

Reaching the flood barriers the water is blocked, rises in front of the flood barriers and finally leaks through or overflows the barriers.

The Flood barriers buy time for the BMA's drainage system. Water flows into the canals to pumping stations, from where it is then pumped into the 3 rivers here in the Chao Praya delta and finally flows into the Gulf of Thailand. In total the lake gets smaller every day, but it is still there, and it is still huge.

[b]Critical areas[/b]

In the west of Bangkok (other side of the river) many districts are inundated (Nonthaburi etc.). In the east / south east Bang Chen and Lad Krabang industrial estates are seeing rising water levels and struggle to survive.

[b]Suvaranabhumi airport[/b]

The airport and the roads from the airport into the mongering / tourist areas have not seen any flood yet. But - the moving lake has just started to reach the area north of the airport (Lad Krabang industrial estate). We don't really know right now how bad that area around the airport will be effected.

[b]Will the mongering area (Sukhumvit, Central Bangkok) be flooded? [/b]

Most likely not. This area is protected by two giant flood tunnels (near Makhasan / Ratchadapisek and Rama 9) and an effective pumping system. Risk is that the pumps fail, or it starts to rain. There was no major rainfall (just a little bit) in the last 10 days, and the raining season should be over. The pumps are more or less working fine. Up to now.

[b]Bangkok dry in 2 weeks[/b]

Some politicians voiced their opinion since Friday, that Bangkok will be dry in 10 days / 2 weeks. That will NOT happen. It will last longer.

[b]Supply situation[/b]

It's still tense, but basically you find everything you need. The 7/11 shops are somehow badly managed, they have some product shortages every day. Other shops are well stocked (Villa Market, Emporium).

We don't get any draft beer right now (Singha, Tiger, Heineken). So we have to sell bottles. No major issue.

Prices for nearly everything have risen (eggs, vegetables, bottled water etc. etc. ).

There is a fight (BMA against flood) ongoing to keep Rama II road open. That's the main traffic connection to the South, located in the west of Bangkok, and right now the main road to deliver goods from logistic centers into the city. The road was closed yesterday afternoon for some hours, and it is now open again. We all don't know the outcome of this ongoing battle in the days to come. If the road needs to be closed for a longer period of time the supply situation in Bangkok could deteriorate.

[b]Tap Water[/b]

It smells a bit "muddy", but still looks clean. Don't drink it, and you should be ok. Up to now it did not cause any problems for the employees / customers here at Livingstone's Lodge.

[b]Health issues[/b]

Many reports about rashes and skin diseases from those living in the flood. No major outbreak of water-born infectious diseases up to now. Still - stay away from the water, it's dirty and polluted with all kinds of stuff picked up on the way down from the North. Don't become a flood tourist!

[b]Mongering situation[/b]

A buyers market. Many girls have left to help their families in the inundated areas, but there are still a lot opportunities out there. Hotels are empty. You can get cheap rooms / special offers everywhere.

[b]Conclusion[/b]

There are still certain risks to travel to Bangkok, but it is somehow manageable now. I still believe that there are better places than Bangkok right now - if you want to go for a vacation.

Some explanations:

- The Sukhumvit area is approx. there where you find "Vadhana" on the map.
- Water is closing in towards the airport from the eastern flood.
- The major movement of water into the central area during the last 2 days can be seen in the Bang Kapi, Srinakarin, Hua Mak area, looks like a wedge to the south into the center of the map

Arrived to Bangkok Nov / 10 around midnight. Airport was basically empty never seen it like that no lines in the passport controls. First time the taxi station stand try to ask me for a fixed price of 400 baht to sukhumvit area. I refused and so they agreed to the normall meter rate plus 50 baht. Did not see any flooding on the way to sukhumvit. As far as girls see a lot more girls standing in streets, specially in soi 11 looking for customers around midnight never seen that before, Also in clubs looks like many more girls than customers. Most buildings have prepared sand bags for the flood but this was interesting in Central Silom big wall of sand bags.
