The alternative is to take tap water and let it boil for an extended period, then letting it cool down, straining it through a cloth and putting it, bottled, in your fridge. In my early years in Indonesia (just one example country) this is what our cook did. There is still no place in Indonesia where you can drink tap water, as opposed to a number of European countries.

No phony "scare stories" are marketed. Only firm adherents to a number of conspiracy theories still believe that.

Ko[/QUOTE]I have been I SE Asia many times and they all use bottle water. I think the only place I have ever been in SE Asia where you can actually drink the water is Singapore. Even I woulden do it becaus I'm european and not use to the same kind of bacteria they have in there water as here.

Some years ago I was in Indonesia for 3 month and I hurt my lower leg and got a big wound on it. It would not heal at all for the last 1 month I was there even there was no inflammation in it. It would just not close. But when I got back to europe it just wendt 1 week and it was gone.

Most of the time you can also smell the water is full of clorin.

In Indonesia they don't even have pipes going from the purification facilitys so they drive arround with small tanks on the trucks to deliver water.

And this is inside Jakarta for most of the hotels and buisness houses.

Even if I go to countryes here in Europe I still think about if its safe for me to drink the water. Even it may be safe but actualy some times you can got a bad stummac just for that. So I rarely drink it anyway.

The same with the food. If you think you can just buy anything to eat your really wrong. Just becaus the local is eating it with not problem aften dosent mean that you can. Unless you want a few days staying at your toilet.

But anyway guys. Shouldn we get back to what this page is all about. Mongering arround in BKK and not about what to eat and drink. :-D

:-D[/QUOTE]What a load of crap. In many places the water is perfectly safe and bottled water is an expensive gimmick. Do you think all the locals buy new bottles every day on their salaries? No, they fill up anywhere there is tap water.

Start slowly; brush your teeth in local water and build up an immunity.

Same with food. Much local food is cooked just before you eat it. Not so the salads and cold meats in 5 star hotels where the food makes many trips in and out of thr fridge picking up bugs along the way.

In a lifetime of travelling and living in Asia I have been sick once. When a 5 star hotel by-passed its water treatment plant to avoid paying for chemicals.

Actually the more expensive it is, the more it sells! It has an inverse (or positive) price elasticity. For some strange reason, people think that drinking expensive bottled water gives them extra prestige or so.

Actually in a test done by a consumer organisation a while ago here (Europe) , it was found that many of the expensive brands of bottled water would not pass the tests for tap water and should come with a warning if used as tap water. Most of the bottled waters have too high a mineral and chemical content.

Unless you want a few days staying at your toilet.[/QUOTE]In BKK the good news is you don't need to eat or drink anything Thai or Thai made, which might be of special concern after the flooding with overflow from the sewer systems, garbage and human excrement, dead carcasses floating around rotting for weeks, etc.

You can drink foreign alcoholic beverages. You can buy canned and otherwise sealed foods from France, Australia, etc. I imagine even the pineapple from Phucket should be safe. Anything else you'ld feel comfortable with?

Perhaps by next year I'd be bold enough to try certain Thai dishes under specific conditions of preparation, location, etc. For now you might want to avoid ingesting too much water from TGs mouths. Who knows where they been, what they've been into, or what's been into them before seeing you, aside from the usual concerns re extra spicy BBBJ's, etc.

The idea of tap water is Safe enough to drink. This is true in USAA for this purified water after the natural water from the wells run through water treatments plants and located everywhere in the counties. In Thailand, the water run through a similar process. Personaly, I don't drink tap water in USA because I like the bottled water just for the taste. However, I use the tap water for cooking. However, once in a while, I drink the tap water and never got sick from that. The water sure contained chrloride treatment bacteria. Anyways, even in Thailand, if Thai's people start to drink tap water they still are safe from water disease.

For us we have lost that immunity. I have seen people drinking water from rivers as well as from taps.

Most bottled mineral waters sold in Western Europe are subjected to less rigorous tests than tap water, and yet the price per litre is about 1, 000 times higher.

In other continents the situation is different. I can only speak for Indonesia, but even in remote kampungs drinking water is sold in bottles with warnings on the seal not to buy the bottle if the seal is broken. Bottled water is not expensive in Indonesia, even for Indonesians, and if anybody still can't afford it, they make it themself by boiling water.

Nobody drinks water straight from rivers or canals.
