I suggested in PM to someone, the Santo Domingo Imperial - tip - call them vs. using their web-mail system since they don't bother to reply.
It is quite a distance from the Metrocentro area - at Km 8.5 so you are 5 miles away from the centre and that far south there is dick all to see, do or buy - it is 4.999 miles from the streetwalker girls on C. Masaya for example.
With a driver or car it is OK and has a nice pool too.
The rooms are VERY plain. Cross between a hostel and a hotel in Texas in the 60's.
Don't know the other one, depends where Canal 2 is. Don't know if they mean a TV station Channel 2 or there are numbered canals.
Vic were you a guest in both or did you just call or ask? They may say anything to get you in there.

Nice tip! This is the first time I had heard of the Hotel Santo Domingo Imperial. Decent looking rooms, grounds and pool and according to their website only 5 minutes from Managua's downtown! (anybody tell me where the hell Managua's downtown is? :D)
Being centrally located in MGA is important as everything is so spreadout. I asked once about the Best Western Las Mercedes by the airport. If I had stayed there I would have spent my entire vacation in a taxi.
How is the Presidential Suite at the Hotel SDI? $70 isn't bad if the room is a big improvment over the singles.

Well , I did stay twice in Santo Domingo Imperial and once in Estancia La Casona last August.
Imperial has a pool, a reasonable breakfast area and a bar and a pleasant reception area. It is more like a Motel but an average one. Yes, it is 5 kms away from Metro Centro ( about 25 - 30 Cordobas , about 1.50 dollar) to get to Metro Centro by taxi. You can walk( 4 minutes) to 24-hr gas stations which provide an enclosed area for fast food together with a small convenience store to buy staple items ( beer, chips, bottled water, bread, milk,etc.). The hotel room has a small fridge and a good color TV with cable.
Estancia La Casona is close to the area where you find the offices of the Embassy of Costa Rica . No it is not a TV Canal . Here is their address in Spanish : Del Canal 2, 1 cuadra al lago ( norte), 1/2 cuadra abajo( oeste), Bolonia. Vic - the address Km 8 1/2 on C. Masaya means it is 8.5 Km not 5 from MetroCentro where the highway starts. With a driver or infinite patience to hail cabs it is an OK choice.
Ford there is no downtown - what there was was destroyed along with 50,000 people in about 4 minutes in 1972 by an earthquake. Nobody wants to rebuild much near where it happened. The old cathedral near the Palacio National is near ground zero.
The la Casona web site looks suspiciously like the Santo Domingo web site, perhaps the same principals. No idea what they mean by Canal 2, though in Spanish Canal is Channel. Bolonia is an OK location, Sol y Luna is there and you are fairly close to the Msr. Lescano area with a few casas. Lots of hoodlums at night though, and way too many hippie backpackers.
Ford is bang on: the location of the Las Americas is horrible unless you want to live in a car, the one advantage is the ability no not use a taxi to go to the airport which is 50 feet away. The Camino Real is bad for the same reason.
I know Ford quite well and he also really knows Managua well. He was joking when he asked where downtown is. It was a good joke.
Canal 2 is one of the principal television stations in Managua. It is located in the barrio of Bolonia, about 5-6 blocks south of the Tica Bus terminal.
The '72 quake "officially" killed 20,000 people in Managua. Modern geological and civil engineering would easily allow the rebuilding of large buildings in what was formerly "downtown" and where everyone says they cannot build. Gee ... aren't the new Casa Presidencial and the new Telcor buildings smack dab in the heart of this "no construction" zone? Bolanos has enough to worry about without having his office collapse around him!
I'm going to have a look at this hotel in December I think.
Accept my regrets for the confusion I may have created . Yes, it is 8.5 kms and yes it is a TV channel.
I still think though the prices , in spite of the distance, are good for a monger willing to pay a taxi a few dollars.
I agree the prices are quite fair, if chicas are not an issue then even better. The SD is simple but a great pool makes up a bit for that, and I think the la Casona is worth a look so I will drop in this month. Bolonia is a better location given the two choices, than 5 miles south of town.

In all my travels, Managua is not only just about the only city I've ever been to w/o a downtown area it may also be about the only place w/o numbered streets. Ask a girl that you meet for her home address and she gets out a compass and a surveyors' map! :D

I realize this isn't naked girl talk ... nor fucking hot chicas information ... but Managua is such a funky and surreal place you just have to enjoy its total absurdness!
Ford is "almost" correct in his discussion of street locations. Actually, when the chica you are dying to fuck is giving you directions she never uses north, south, east, or west (no one even knows these directions). They always use "al lago", towards the lake (north); "a las montanas", towards the mountains (south); "arriba", where the sun comes up (east); and "abajo", where the sun goes down (west).
My favorite marker point in Managua is "el arbol", which is near Monsenor Lezcano. El Arbol is translated as "the tree". Now how do you find the fucking tree in a Central American city with maybe 10 million trees? Not "a" tree ... but "the" tree! The best hoot of all is that for maybe 10 years there was not a tree at the corner which was known as "el arbol". Ex-president Aleman (when he wasn't too busy embezzling millions) actually had a ceremony where he physically planted a tree at "el arbol" ......... only in Nicaragua. What a country!
Never heard other than "sur" for south though. Also directions are fequently from where things used to be most notably Donde fue Sandy's. So a visitor needs to know the former location of landmarks, and as you point out, the tree.
And named traffic lights, such as the semaforo rubenia or el dorado.
I sent mail to someone with such directions, using a part of a barrio as the start (Villa Libertad part of Villa Venezuela) , a hardware store, then description with colors of the house, and compass turns,and a card got there is a little over 10 days. Vs. the DR where they have addresses but the delivery standard is, well, never.
It is amazing isn't it? I cannot believe that the local DHL driver/mailman can find the little shacks, alley-ways, and toe-paths in the barrios of Managua. Did you send your's via regular mail or DHL? It is even more amazing that regular mail was delivered. Many times I have sent DHL to ……

Villa Libertad and Villa Venezuela are the two roughest barrios in the City. You must have been sending something to a "working girl" as that is the poorest part of Managua where a hell of a lot of the girls live.
