if you ever get busted while mongering here are some things to think about:

1. the cop that busted you, has no interest in taking you to the police station and filing charges. for him this is opportunity to supplement his income, and no matter what he may say, it's important that you remember this.

2. his leverage is the fact that you're doing something that you don't want your family/friends/colleagues to know about.

3. the more worried he thinks you are about (a) going to the station and (b) people finding out, the more you're probably going to wind up paying him. as such if you act like you don't give a shit about what people think, you'll probably get off relatively inexpensively. hard to do though, under the scenario - most of us have a lot to lose.

4. at some stage, he'll ask you for your name and address. give your real name and address - if things escalate, the worst thing for you is that you were impersonating someone else. that can turn into all types of trouble.

5. he will use every method possible to intimidate you - the threat of legal prosecution, media coverage, public exposure, family involvement, office disgrace. remember what i said in point 1.

5. cops are trained to profile. depending on what language you're more comfortable in, what car you drive, what phone you have, what clothes you wear, etc, he'll have a mental picture of how much you'd be willing and able to pay him to let you off the hook.

6. he's unlikely to tell you what this figure is and will try to get you to put a number forward. if he does put forward a number, it's guaranteed that number is several times higher than what he's willing to settle for.

7. i don't know what a reasonable figure is. i'd guess anywhere from rs.3000 to rs.6000. maybe more, i'm not sure.

8. he knows that you may not have money in your pocket, but that you do have a debit card. if possible, maintain a bank account that doesn't have more than a couple of thousand rupees in it, and when you're mongering, make sure that's the only card you carry. he also has an interest in dealing with you, taking the money and leaving as soon as he can.

9. remember, that what he's doing, is also wrong. he's supposed to take you to the police station and file charges.

The average for foreigners should be 1000 - 2000 period. For locals anywhere from 200 - 1000 INR. Bottom line you need to have the balls to call his bluff.

Another post on Delhi from my experiences last week..

Being a weekend wanted some action and thus decided to start out from a few pubs I know. Not much luck at the pubs as the only gals there seemed to be already with someone. Met this cabbie on my way back and started talking casually about girls. He suggested GB road but since I had been there already, wanted to try something else. He said he knew a few students who wold be interested in some extra cash. He said he will get them in 30 mins. True to his word, 2 girls did turn up in 30 mins.

They looked more like street trash than college girls and could barely speak English. Since there was no way my hotel would allow them, I asked the cabbie for options. He said he could set me up in a cheap hotel for a few hours. After a 30 mon ride sandwiched between the gals, we reached a hotel. However the hotel owner reacted very strongly once told why I wanted to rent a room and we have to move out of there. By this time I was not in a mood to try another hotel and the girls were mediocre as well. So I paid the cabbie 500 bucks and went back to the hotel.

All in all, a night wasted without any action. Something I learnt is not to trust cabbies with the quality of the product.

Since I was still eager for some action, I called a number from HT the next morning. Answered by some lady who offerred Russian/Afghan ladies. However since I was gunning for some Indian action (when in India do as Indians do), I asked for something Indian. She told me the girl will meet me in the Hotel lobby in an hour. She intially quoted 15000 for a couple of cups of tea but I downriht declined and threatened to call another agent. Fianlly we settled for 9000 for 2 cups of tea.

Nothing happenned after the hour so I dozed off watching Tele. However a couple of hours later I recived a call from the house phone in the lobby. Went down and was pleasently surpised to see this Indian girl dressed in fully Indian clothes (as I had requested).

She was around 5.6", wheathish, curvy and enticing. We sat in the lobby for a while just doing small talk. Then I offerred her some wine which I had in my room we we moved to my room. This is my first time in Delhi (and India, though I've been in a couple of other cities on this trip), and I am in town until Sunday. I'd like to take the day Saturday to go to Agra, but before then I'd like to sample some of the local female "culture." I am staying at Le Meridien (sweet hotel, by the way, and cheaper than comparable hotels in Mumbai), and would like an easy, beginner's way to monger, preferably with Indian girls, but I'd settle for a girl from another country in the general area.

Either the goods are not worth or expense. Also to put on record the scarcity & difficulty in getting to them.

Visited pubs in gurgaon, where scene looks promising.

Past reports also reaffirm "NCR is dry"
