Hello,
I did stay at flamingos 2 times but the service did indeed go down deep. Arriving a few minutes to late for free breakfast and they will make you pay for it. If I have to pay I can have better options outside, just walk out. All the rooms are very basic no need to choose the superior one. One of the night staff at reception did have the guts to ask me for 10$. Later he did say he would pay me back. Every night when returning from outside I had to chase the guard from the quest computer in the lobby and if it wasn't him most of the time it would be the other staff. Just showing up and looking at them wouldn't make my intentions clear everytime I had to ask some of the '' english speaking'' staff to chase the guard away and to do his job. 80% of the staff there shouldn't be working in the tourist industry. One more annoying thing they keep standing behind me while I was connected to yahoo messenger and trying to read my conversations. In the past I did think the Thai were chasing away the tourist but now it is clear that the Cambodians are doing the same. One more the use of mobiles during working hours (but this was at a riverside restaurant) I pretended to take a photo and show it to her boss who would come to pick up the money in the afternoon! Anyway a lot of tourist will not be able to travel there because of the worldwide crisis so maybe it will be better after a few years.
Greetings,
Frits

Quote: This is nothing new. Most of the Cambodians are pretty well known for ripping off tourist. They would do whatever they could to make a dollar of two from foreigners. I guess poverty has a lot to do with it.
Believe it or not I found everyone in PP more honest with my change in bars or motor taxi prices etc than in Bangkok. I actually was expecting a big rip off city based on what I had read but I found the opposite.
The Flamingo Hotel issue has little to do with poverty. The owners are rich and this scam is a well-orchestrated way to rip off customers. I can understand a poor tuk tuk driver who makes $10 a day trying to charge $1 more for a ride but a big hotel like this? No way.
Cheers

There is NO EXIT VISA - yes, there IS a $25 fee to FLY OUT - but it is an AIRPORT FEE. You can take a BUS for "no exit charge except for the bus cost" (and take 12 hours getting back to BKK as well)
Look at your BKK fees and you will see 500B AIRPORT FEE there, too
To get from Flamingo to PNH you can take a moto rickshaw for $6 or Flamingo's mini for $7. I like the chance to take candid pictures from the back of the moto Of course, it's not aircon...
the main ting Flamingo has going for it compared to WA is a LIFT the second thing is WiFi and the third is the in-room SAFE. Once WA opens the hotel that used to be ChipLay (next door) the lift issue goes away

Hotel Issue
Phnom Penh is a small size city. It really does not matter where you stay unless you want everything within walking distance. Who would want to walk around in the middle of night anyway?
Motos are cheap. generally $1 or less. Tuk Tuk are $2 anywhere.
Generally all hotels try to sqeeze you for more money saying they gave you a better room. Who knows what are the other rooms are like?
This clearly shows it is better to book through agoda, asiatravel etc rather than directly from the hotel. There are many internet cafe's around. No need to worry about wi fi.
I usually stay at Riverside hotel. Walking distance to many clubs. Breakfast is not that good. Rooms are ok for $30/night. Little run down hotel but clean and they are very friendly. They have safe downstairs not in the room.
There is a massage place within 2 blocks . Charge is $8 for 2 hours. did not ask for extras.

some advice
Hi Guys,
I spend a lot of time in Vietnam and China / HK and am coming for the first time to PP next month.
Having RTFF I still have a few questions which I hope one of the more experienced of you could help me out with :
I will probably be staying at the Intercon or another 5 star hotel. Is there a 5 star hotel which has in house massage with FS or a bar where FL hang out?
Am I restricted to Casa or Holiday Manhattan if the above is my criteria. Neither of these hotels look like 5 star from their websites.
I read a report about a bar call ed Moscow anybody have more info on that?
Thanks,
Dabeast

Thanks for the info on Flamingos Blastoff. I was seriously considering staying there this upcoming May, but believe I will try somewhere else now.

First of all, can't really compare the Flamingo to the Walkabout. I had stayed at both for 2 nites each and the difference is great. The Flamingo (overall hotel and rooms ) would be consider a 1st class place compare to the Walkabout room I stayed in (very dark/ run down-also a sense that place is not that clean), but what do you expect as the price of a Walkabout room is about 1/3 or less than the Flamingo.
Only real advantages to Walkabout:
1) just have to walk down to lobby for a quick and cheap room.
2) just have to walk down to lobby for a quick and cheap beer.
3) just have to walk down to lobby for a quick and cheap f**k.
Disclaimer:
Just my experiences of course as yours may vary.

Hi There,
You will have a lot of fun in PP.
All hotels even cheap ones either have massage or will call a girl to your room for you for either massage, massage with a happy ending or full sex no problem.
If you are staying at a 5 Star hotel then you can afford to spend a little money and get much higher class girls from clubs and better establishments that Walkabout and Martini's. If you can afford to spend around USD$100 per day on drinks and high-class girls, you will have the time of your life in PP.
One of the best references to what is where is the local pocket book available free from many hotel lobbies and bookstores or on line. Here is the web site: www.cambodiapocketguide.com
There are 3 different guides available, the Dining & Drinking (which has the most information on bars etc) The Out and About which is great for travelling and the After Dark which is a little disappointing as more is covered in the Dining & Drinking.
Have fun.

It's too bad to read about this sort of thing going on at Flamingo.
I haven't been in a couple of years, but it sure seems like the service has dropped way off since Frank, the previous GM, died. Well, technically, he quit, then dropped dead a few days later. :( But he never would have put up with crap like this.
I will say I had trouble with the free pickup. On two consecutive trips, a year apart, the moron pick-up guy didn't show. I complained about it the first time, but they were insistent that he did show, but I wasn't there. I didn't press it, as the fact of the matter was that there were two flights from BKK, both landing about the same time, although they did know my flight information. But the second time, I wouldn't take no for an answer. They relented and gave me a free return trip to the airport.
The front desk staff were always kind and very helpful.
Again, too bad. Sounds like it's become a typically Khmer-run joint now.

Flamingos
Sounds like it's become a typically Khmer-run joint now.
So true. I used to really like the place when they opened and Frank was in charge. I stayed loyal even after they went all-Khmer and standards started dropping. But the last couple times were just hopeless -- missing reservations, dodgy housekeeping, just a general sense that they're doing the absolute minimum possible to keep the place running. Even the Walkabout has a better feeling to it, and that's pretty faint praise.
That sounds ok to me. Presumably the rooms aren't so bad that one wouldn't be able to bring girls back.
I've not been to PP yet but will be popping my PP cherry in November (sigh.. so far away). I'll be in Cambodia for a couple of weeks and plan on traveling around a bit but definitely want to spend long enough in PP to sample all the delights I've heard about. After all, you don't travel that far without making sure you get to experience everything on offer!!

Php V\s Hcm
Seems like a good hotel and has a good deal for 3 nights. I just read in general info the PHP is a dangerous place . How safe it is compared to HCM. Personality wise, which girls are better. Vietnamese or Cambodian. I don't like the skinny ones nor the bulky one. I love good asses. I have to make this trip before this month end. Thanks for all the info.

PP Girls

Hi, I was there a few weeks back and I suggest that you don't compromise and try both. I have had good and bad lays from both so it is not a Vietnamese vs Cambodian thing, it is individual girls that are good or bad in bed like any country more or less. You will have a better chance of finding a full and rounded ass with Cambodian girls as Vietnamese usually have a flatter ass but their skin is whiter.
As for danger, I found the street in general far safer and less hassle that Bangkok or Saigon. No one other than the Tuk Tuk or motorbike taxies even talks to you. I felt very safe day and night but of coarse keep your eyes and ears open anywhere you travel.
I suggest that you sample everything and decide for yourself.
Best of luck
Thanks. Is this a proper gym or just some equipment outdoors?
Not a really bigo one. Today I had a workout at Paddies Gymn (price 3 $), 50 meters away from the Japanese bridge. Big one with a kind of warehouse-atmosphere, good one.
If you go from the circle around the National Monument the road to Monivong after 150 meters there is a six floor building. In the fourth and fifth floor you can see people doing their workout on steppers eg. Seems quite western styled, but I"ve never been inside.
