Of course, with the "scheduled and pretty much announced "patrols", all they are managing to do is to make the ladies cross the road until after they pass by.

What they HAVE managed to do is to drive the "ordinary girls" (just in for some extra money) off beach road for fear they will be listed on a tum ruat record as a hooker.

as to picking up a jail bait (as in UNDER !8) girl, check their ID - they have to be 18 to get the national ID card. And, of course, it helps IF you can ARN PASA THAI. (READ THAI LANGUAGE)

Also, the tum ruat only works the BEACH side of the road. The word goes out about 100 meters or so before they get there.

THERE IS NEVER ANY ACTION TAKEN AGAINST GUYS ON BEACH ROAD unless you are stoned or disorderly (that's MY observation, anyway).

Prostitution as such is not illegal in Thailand, although any person who, for the purpose of prostitution, solicits, induces, introduces herself or himself to, follows or importunes a person in a street, public place or any other place in an open and shameless manner or causes nuisance to the public, shall be liable to a fine not exceeding one thousand Baht (Section 5 of the law).

Solicitation "in an open and shameless manner" is not allowed and causing a nuisance to the public is also forbidden.

So a girl who sits quietly in a bar and waits until she is approached by a man, acts fully within the law. Even a beach road hooker, who doesn't call you and isn't dressed in a "hooker" style outfit shouldn't have to worry.

Section 8 of the law deals with the prostitute's clients and only those who engage prostitutes below the age of 18 year old can be punished.

I had once got into trouble with a Taxi guy when I was traveling with a Thai hooker to my hotel. He was trying to charge double fare thinking I would pay up in front of the girl. He threatened to call the police stating that he will report prostitution etc. I did not bow down and stood my ground in the situation. In fact I called tourist police myself and reported about the matter.

This taxi guy immediately had a change of stand and did not even collect fare and fled away from the hotel porch. The police did call back from reception and assured that I was OK and matter sorted out. No mention of the WG or anything from the hotel or police.
