I read the negative report and if that had happen to me I would have been pissed. When I make a reservation I spell out that I want the $25 room and when I check in I verify the price.
The staff is always cheerful and pleasant and when the Wifi in the room shuts down, a phone call to the desk gets an immediate reply and it usually is fixed in a few minutes. Sometimes the whole Internet, which is available in the lobby if you don't have a notebook, is down and we all wait for it to come up.

The breakfast is certainly not up to the standards of the Nana buffet in BK but it is convenient and for me the fruit plate is fine to start the day.

It is a block from Walkabout and across the street from Shanghai and right on the corner is Black Cat. Heart of Darkness and Howies Bar are 100 meters down Street 51 St.

When the girl leaves I always get a call from the front desk asking me if it is ok for her to leave. They are protective without being intrusive.

The rooms are not large but have a big window and the bed is not too bad. The bathroom is small but not a problem.

I have never stayed at Cozyna so i can't compare. You will enjoy PP wherever you stay.

Night 3:

Day # 3 began with breakfast at the French coffee shop on 241st. Café latte and mango pancakes. Then I walked over to Sentosa Silk to be measured for a silk shirt. I wandered around the riverfront; bought some DVD’s and made a repeat visit to Lake Baille. I continued my walking tour and had lunch at a nice riverside cafe. Again, by 3pm I was soaked with perspiration and a little tired so I returned to the hotel swimming pool to cool down and rest up for the night time action.

After another good dinner at Khmer Borane, I decided tonight was the night to check out 51st. I did not know how far I would get but I was looking forward to this adventure. Around 9pm I walked into Shanghai bar. Shanghai Bar is definitely an upscale watering hole and the place was rocking. I was met at the door by a very attractive hostess girl wearing a black dress. She escorted me to an empty table and asked if I wanted company. Normally I would have declined in order to check the place out, but this girl was very pretty and had a great smile, so I said yes. She sat down and I ordered drinks. It wasn’t long before another very pretty girl came by and I offered her a drink as well. So this looked like a promising start to the evening. Then as we started to get acquainted one of the girls suggested we adjourn to the patio where we could talk better. Although there were plenty of customers in the patio as well, we found an empty table and continued our conversation in delightful surroundings. Now I don’t know what happened or more accurately why it happened. I guess I was just tired or not quite in gear after all the great sex I had had the three previous nights, but when I eventually asked one of the girls if she wanted to go somewhere with me, she said yes, she wanted to go dancing. I said “Dancing? No I was not into that.” And for some reason I did not follow up the dancing suggestion with a better alternative. I just let it lie there. So we continued to talk. Outside Shanghai Bar my faithful tuk tuk driver was waiting for me. I told him to take me to Les Cyrcee Club. Cyrcee is right around the corner more or less, but it is all by itself on this particular block. It was peaceful and quiet, but I would not recommend walking there at night. It must have been around a quarter to ten when I walked into Cyrcee Club. The layout is similar to the 104st. bars in that it is narrow and deep yet cozy. There were about 20 girls at the bar and 2 or 3 customers. I ordered a beer and sat down at a table against the wall. Now I have to be honest in my reporting. As I looked around the bar I did not see ANY girls above a 5. I drank my beer and thought it’s OK, after this I will go over to Heat of Darkness and see what that is all about. And then I saw her, a diamond in the ruff, a real gem: little Am. I would rate her as an all around 7.5. I asked her to join me and I bought her a drink. We began the usual talk talk and I noticed she had a nice personality. As we talked I saw that there was a balcony/second story in the back of the bar. I asked Am if we could go up there in order to be alone. She said sure so we gathered up our drinks and went upstairs. On the balcony you could stand near the railing, look down on the bar, and anybody in the bar could look up and see you. But if you sat in the chairs towards the back there was total privacy. So we sat down and began a passionate make out session. It was like a high school date at a drive-in movie. I told Am I wasn’t sure if I had enough “power” to go all the way but she did not seem to mind. Outside my tuk tuk driver wanted to know where I wanted to go next. It was a around 1am and I was too tired to check out anymore bars, but I told him to go very slowly down 51st all the way to Preah Sihanouk Blvd. before heading to my hotel so I could see HOD and the other bars. It was nice night with a faint breeze as we past HOD at 5 kilometers per hour. I could not see much from the road except the place was packed and looked very inviting. I thought that maybe tomorrow night, my last night in town I would finally make it to the fabled Hear of Darkness.

Conclusion Shanghai Bar: Highly recommended.

Ambiance - 9.5. This is a great well managed upscale bar. Great ambiance, pretty girls, lots of stuff going on. What more do you want? The patio is best.

Selection of girls - 8.9. A very good selection of attractive and friendly girls. I don’t know why I didn’t hook up with either of my two little Shanghai hostess girls. Another night it would have been a done deed.

Conclusion Cyrcee Club: Thumbs up.

Ambiance – 8. This is a cozy, friendly, little bar. Very similar to the 104st. bars, but a little isolated all by itself a couple of blocks from most of the action on Pasteur St. The balcony/mezzanine is a great feature. I was able to test drive Am and knew she was a great girl before I even left the place. Am got me back in gear and restored my “power”

Selection of girls – mixed. The majority of girls were not that attractive. They rate about a 5 IMHO. Now I don’t know if all the good girls were already taken out when I arrived or what, but in all truth, I was not that impressed with the quality of talent.

Am – a real winner. She was very pretty; I would rate her face 7.5. She was short (all Cambodian girls are short) and had an hourglass figure with nice “b” cup breasts, and round hips. I would rate her body 7.5. She was great in and out of bed, had a great personality and I would rate her overall performance 9.

You know I think I these wonderful Cambodian girls are spoiling me. One last day in Phnom Penh and I do not want to leave. Oh the horror of going back to Bangkok for 8 days of GoGo’s, massage parlors, and Thai cuisine. I don’t know if I can stand it!

Hey nice report. But concerning the Shanghai Bar. Takeout for sex is not always very easy. A lot of the girls are willing to be barfined for dancing only. As others have reported in the past and through my own experience it seems that a lot of those girls won't go out for boom boom.

Cyrcee and Shanghai are at pretty much opposite ends of the PP spectrum. Cyrcee is really just a brothel, though they can no longer use their on-site rooms. Shanghai is mainly a tease. It can be fun and the girls can be charming, but if you're looking for a girl to take home it's generally a waste of time and money.

I fully agree with AF. I stayed at Flamingo's last week during the Khmer New Year. Booked a $30 double and paid accordingly. Got a free pick up from the airport, Paid $7 for the return trip.
Each time i took a babe to my rooom had no problems at all- just got smiles. And after the event when she left, got a call from reception asking if everything was in order.
Found things quiet at Heart of Darkness. Cyrcee seemed to be closed at 8 pm evening!!. Found it was easiest to pick up from Walkabout round the corner. Any time- day or night. Picked up Ina and Honey from there. Went by smiles rather than sour faced babes. Paid $15 for ST and $25 for LT.
Would describe the action as just normal. No great shakes.
Tuk Tuk fellow took me to a brothel. Had a look- Babes seemed to be a 6-8 but when i asked for hotel delivery was told not possible. Cost offered was $15 short term inclusive of room upstairs. Deferred as i didnt want to take the chance of getting into trouble. Felt far more safe in the confines of the Flamingo room.
By the way was intially puzzled by all menu's , rates etc everywhere being quoted in dollars and wondering about the change requirement. Found out that change is given back in dollars except for amounts below 1 dollar which was given as 1000 reils per 25 cents. Did not have any change problem at all .
Like advised earlier in the forum do not use bigger than a $20 bill.

IMHO Cambodia is worth it as a mongering destination only if one is spending more than a week for this purpose.

I want to thank Betong and Southbound69 for their feedback on my report. It really clears things up for me. It is free exchange of information that makes this forum so valuable and why I became a member. There is no better source anywhere.

Visitors like me are welcome and can order drinks, talk to the girls, but are not entitled to member privileges – No take out BOOM BOOM. To be a member you must live in PP.

Shanghai might be worth it long term if you like drinking there. Personally I didn't. Ok for the air-con if you need to pop in somewhere cool. I found some of the girls pretty but very false and I couldn't be bothered with a long term investment in the hope of meeting them outside. Heart of Darkness is more my cup of tea. Cyrcee cannot admit to having rooms on the premises for 'legal' reasons but on the second and third visits I was told a different story and the non-existent rooms were suddenly available.

Shanghai is not on the top of my list either, but somebody is doing these girls. I had great times at HOD, Zanzibar, Rose Bar and Cyrcee. And when I return to Phnom Penh that's where I will go first.

I have been back home for around 45 days and I am already thinking of my next trip. Next time I think I will spend 14 days in PP not including a 4 day holiday at Sihanoukville beach. I can't wait!

The big thing in PP these days is to fill your bar with cute new young girls who speak little or no English and aren't expected to go with customers. Check out almost any hostess bar along 104 or 136. If you live here, learn a few hundred words of Khmer, and spend enough time and money, you can begin to score them on a kind of girlfriend basis. But otherwise, no way. To me it's part of what makes PP about an A- as a mongering city if you're a resident or long-term visitor, but no better than about C+ if you're just passing through.

For what it's worth, I was at a place over on 63rd a couple yrs back when something like this happened. In my case, I happened to turn over and look at the door exactly at the moment that someone's hand was reaching in thru the door and grabbing my pants off the hook. Funny, but if you think about the economics, apparently somewhere along the way it became more profitable in the long run to take care of foreign customers in this way than to actually provide the product as advertised. Some years back, these places actually did come thru and offer what they said they did. And at some point it changed. Not sure why, aside from the obvious -- that it's more profitable to take all their money than just the $5-10 they're willing to pay. And I guess not enough of the foreigners were repeat customers, so good service became pointless.

Even when they did deliver their services, it wasn't what I'd ever call "good". Even back then it was unpleasant.

A few years ago I went there with exactly 5 USD in my pocket.
Having done the deed they even had stolen my cigs and lighter worth less than a dollar. Never been there again even service was average.

Yes, Cozyna IS guest Friendly!

How far from the action? Well, in PP the action is spread out. Get a copy of one of the free guides when you arrive. They have maps and bar / clubs locations marked.
For me the riverside location of Cozyna was good with loads of places to eat and drink nearby BUT in the evenings it is ALLWAYS better for a Newbee (for safety reasons) to grab a motorbike taxi or Tuk-Tuk rather than walk in unfamiliar dark streets.

Bars can vary from night to night and week to week but last year I enjoyed Street 104 bars (See my PP report of 22nd October 2008.)

It is possible, and pretty safe, to walk along the riverside to street 104 from Cozena in 10 mins or so but my recommendation would be ALLWAYS to take a motorbike taxi or Tuk-Tuk late night / early morning when returning to your hotel! It only costs US$1.00 or so.

Some posts back, hotel scam was discussed. I thought I would add my experience to a list of “how to avoid being conned by hotel”.

I took a bike taxi from the airport. I was on the way to HCMC. The bike guy took me to a hotel near the central market. It was ok, so I decided to take it.
The guy at the hotel asked me to pay first (30USD for 2 nights) . This may be because I didn’t want to leave my passport with them while I was staying there. So I paid and got the receipt.

2 days later when I was checking out, this same guy asked me to pay 30 USD. “Wot? Again?” I said I had paid already when I checked in. He now looked in his book and “pretends” if he has such payment record in the book. Of course he could not find it. He does this with a straigh face. I said I have the receipt. After a bit of time, fortunately I found it and showed it to him. He “pretends” to look at it very carefully and tries to match with a record in the book. “Of course” he cannot find it. But eventually he gave way.

In summary:
1. If you pay in advance, insist on a receit. Don’t shuffle it into your back pocket, but take your time and look at what was written; date, amount, number of nights, and ask for a signature and/or hotel’s stamp. And KEEP IT.
2. Keep calm and be firm.
3. (Optional) Do not take off your eye off the receipt you just handed him. (Am I too paranoid?)
