Cabaret seemed a good description for the Coliseum, which included dancing girls, famous (so I was told) singers and comedians, and the occasional katoey (see attached photo). All very tasteful though, and no traditional dances or costumes...

just wrapped up a trip to bkk and figured i’d write about my experiences. since i’m a newbie, many of these things may be basic to you veterans, but i hope someone finds this useful. (wrote by topic, not in any particular order.) guys, don’t be afraid to post – the more we write the better this forum becomes!

airport

bkk is one of the newer but maddening airports. immigration completely sucks so run off the plane to beat the herd if possible (nothing you can do if a bunch of planes land at the same time.) make sure you have plenty of time when leaving to catch your flight; instead of having one queue where passengers get in line (first in first out), each immigration desk has its own line so chaos inevitably ensues. families and friends break up in different lines but then scurry to converge when it becomes apparent which desk is moving quickest (which only slows things down again). no matter what you try, your immigration officer will work the absolute slowest, haha. passengers beg to cut to the front of the line because of departing planes, but everyone’s in the same boat. it’s an absolute mess for people used to efficient airports like nrt, sin, or hkg. you can easily end up waiting 45-60 minutes depending on the situation. this airport is as bad as lhr, jfk, or lax.

airport cabs

i felt bad reading about the one guy who got ripped off by a cab driver. i prefer to take the hotel or airport limo/shuttle when first arriving. while at thb 700-900 + the thb 65 expressway toll it is two to three times more expensive than a metered cab, you can leave *immediately* and don’t have to deal with the hassle of getting ripped off or waiting in a massive queue. don’t be cheap over us$15 and just pay to skip to the front of the line and to get to your hotel quickly and in comfort! when returning to the airport, i just used a metered cab and he was all bitchy and moany on how he had to pay the airport tolls coming back, how he was a bangkok "city-only" driver. this was all bullshit and very annoying, so i told him off a bit, he just kept driving, but the whole experience was pleasant and his cab was clean/cool so i paid him an even thb 400 when we got to the airport. he was overjoyed. if you’re stuck in a situation, the meter bill from the center of bangkok to the airport is only about thb 200 + the 65 in tolls, so maybe just tell the drive you’ll pay him thb 400 or 500 and that should shut him up.

hotel

i stayed in the grand sukhumvit by sofitel because of a good deal online (around us$100 a night). i’d highly suggest you try out all the travel aggregators like kayak.com, orbitz.com, expedia.com because you can easily find some good deals in bangkok. the sofitel site even had a "low rate" guarantee (their online rate was higher) but i didn’t bother because of the hassle. you must book with sofitel, then "show" them the site and claim your refund and bonus. not really worth it when the difference was only about us$10-15.

this is not the best hotel but not the worst either. it has slow, smelly elevators and the pool area sucks because it’s small and the two towers block most of the sunlight. but i’d definitely stay again because the location can’t be beat. you exit the hotel and turn left and you can be at nana entertainment plaza (nep) in about five minutes walking. you exit and turn right and you can be at the bts nana station in five minutes after cutting through one alley. security is decent (you need a keycard to access the elevator), the pool is pretty poor (small, in the middle of two towers so sunlight is blocked), but the rooms are big, you have a full size elevator (not the typical mini-bar size) so it’s great for buying beer and other stuff, and the bed is fantastic. since you’ll be presumably spending most of your time either sleeping or banging, all the other things really aren’t that important.

nana entertainment plaza

much has been written of nep so i won’t repeat the obvious. if you’re still confused where it is, get the standard hotel map every single hotel carries (it’s the same one sponsored by shops, etc.) and find the bts nana (skytrain). it’s a little bit west and then a bit south, but it’s clearly marked on the map, you can’t miss it. don’t be too surprised, the place is a dump. it’s out in the open, there are throngs of people milling about and stray dogs/cats running around. this wasn’t a problem for me and i think it gives it some character! i walked around each floor checking out the various beer bars and go go clubs. be careful of the ladyboys on the second floor. i’m not homophobic but the whole ladyboy thing freaks me out a bit. they were playful and funny in a weird way so there’s no need to be hostile, but that whole thing just isn’t my cup of tea. when i got back to the ground floor, the hostess at the lollipop bar grabbed (the girl who stands outside and says "come to my club") after seeing me walk around twice and we hit it off immediately. she was very cute, not a model or stunner but a girl next door type, some english, definitely enough to get by. we had a drink, i paid a bar fine, it took a bit longer than usual to finally leave because she didn’t have a replacement and they had to figure something out. i guess most people pick up the go-go girls in bikinis and such, but this girl was beautiful, friendly, cheerful. we went to the nana hotel disco, had a great time, and the rest is history. strong recommendation: if you’re into beer bars, personality goes a long way. pick a girl who genuinely clicks with you and you’ll have the greatest time, a true gfe – at least when it’s new and fresh and not when the girl or wife is a drag and a ball-and-chain! overall damage probably about thb 4, 000 factoring everything in (drinks, bar fine, going to the night club, food and drinks afterwards, etc.) she had to leave "early" and not stay the night (it was around 2am) but i preferred that and didn’t need or want her hanging around anyways. mornings are always a mess and i’m not that desperate for a wake-up blowjob. she gave me her number and e-mail and i would definitely take her out again, i had a great time.

• don’t play it by ear, plan ahead and make sure you can hit all the spots you want, especially if you are short on time. oily places tend to open earlier like 10am. eden opens around 1pm. don’t go to the soapies too late or the selection will stink. nep closes at 1am now. if i could do it all over again, i'd hit oily first, then eden/soapies for best selection, then follow up with beer bars and go-go clubs at night because selection lasts (bigger supply)

• i thought thonglor was great. clean but not a huge selection of girls when i was there. lucked out with view. want to try lucky next time. both 1 and 2 are walking distance from each other. i thought tulip was a dump and will never go there again, especially with so many other places.
