Some German guy was in there extremely upset. Two of the Hotel Management Staff were speaking with him. Turns out he simply ignored the NO SMOKING ORDINANCE in Davao City and had been assed a Fine of P 5,000 ($ 108). He did not want to pay this but the Hotel Staff refused to back down. They reminded him of the City Ordinance and that he was informed of this upon check in. Ended with him apologizing and paying the fine.

If a guy smokes, Davao IS NOT the Place to visit. The Ordinance strictly prohibits smoking in any place inside any Hotel in the City. Marco Polo has an outside smoking area off the Eagles Nest Bar on the ground floor. Each time you want to smoke you must ride the elevator to the ground floor and go to this smoking area. This IS what that 18 year old from CDO that I made the mistake of bringing to Davao a year ago had to do. She told me that there were a lot of young women there smoking. Only good thing about it.

Only place I can recommend for smokers is the Red Knight Garden. This is very far from the main section of the city and somewhat isolated. But it has an open air restaurant which is operating from 06:00 AM until 10:00 PM. I should forewarn you that you may very well run into difficulties transiting through Manila because APEC runs from November 17 to 20 and only starts on November 17, not ends.

Manila will be on lock-down for 4 days between November 17 to 20.

The APEC conference is being held on November 18 and 19, with Heads of State arriving and departing at all times between late on Oct 17 until late Oct 19 or 20.

I suspect you got the cheaper fare because very few people wanted to fly to Manila at that time and they wanted to fill up the planes.

As I said earlier, you know from your frequent travels to the Philippines that if anything can go wrong it will, and I respectfully suggest that you are flirting with disaster to think you can fly into Manila and on to Davao at anytime between November 17 and 20 without any major hassles, postponements or even having flights diverted.

Just my humble opinion from someone who has lived in Manila for 18 years.
