Laguito apartment available next week
At the last minute, a crisis at work forced me to cancel my plans to come to Cartagena next week (read: sh*tf*ck!!!). Since it is so late, I can't back out on my commitment to the apartment, one of Juan Ventura's, but if you know anyone who is looking for a place to stay next week - it is for 6 nights, from Mon 2/5 to Sun 2/11 - please let me know, PM me..

thoughts on the best location for wind sports and finding girls in the Caribbean
If you are interested in combining wind sports with mongering Cartagena is probably the best spot in the Caribbean from January through March. The water is dirty and most of the beaches are unattractive. So, outside of the Christmas and Easter high seasons, there's a lot of open water and beach space. The wind almost always comes up strong in the afternoon in Cartagena in January, February and March. It's less predicatable in December and April; other times of the year it's not worth the trip.
It's true there are a lot of other places where you can wind surf or kiteboard during the day and find a girl at night in the Caribbean, but your options are much greater in Cartagena than in other spots. The wind is stronger along the coast of Venezuela, but unlike the Colombian coast, where many of the best venues have forgiving side-shore conditions, the wind for many of the best Venezuelan spots is off-shore. At night your options are limited. Porlamar and Willemstad are much smaller cities and have fewer options for girls; It's much more problematic in terms of time, money and logistics to be on the water on Isla Margarita in the afternoon and clubbing in Porlamar in the night. In my experience, the odds of having a really poor P4P experience in Porlamar are much higher than in Cartagena. In different degrees, this is true of all the smaller Caribbean islands.
The bigger islands aren't much better. Havana might compare in terms of size to Cartagena. I do not know Cuba, but I know the wind is less predicatable than in Cartagena. From what I read, my sense is things are more complicated in Cuba. All the more so if you are American.
Likewise, you can go to the Dominican Republic, but the wind is significantly less dependable in Caberete than along the north coast of South America. You'll have options for girls and it's easier to get by without Spanish, but nearby Sosua doesn't offer the variety and quality of girls you can find in Cartagena. In terms of wind, it's not impossible to get skunked out for a week in Caberete. Often, when the wind comes up, you are sharing space with hundreds of other people.
I could keep going along the Spanish Main, Panama City is too far from Punta Chame. Adicora is too far from everything. Cancun; less wind, less opportunites.
As for the Colombian coast, the wind and venues outside of Barranquilla may be slightly better than what you'll find in Cartagena, but getting to the beach is much more involved in Barranquilla than in Cartagena. Peurto Velero is a great spot, but getting there and coming back to Barranquilla at night is going to take time, money and maybe some chance. And Barranquilla isn't as strong a mongering spot as Cartagena. Santa Marta has powerful erratic winds, everything is screwed up there because of the mountains and it's considered even less of a mongering destination than Barranquilla.
I recommend a tour of the Bocas de Ceniza, before dropping into the water at any point between Peurto Colombia and the Magdalena. Got to think twice about what is draining out of that river. Likewise, the length of beach between Cienaga and KM11 looks fantastic, but as an obvious gringo travelling alone I wouldn't linger in Cienaga.
East of the Sierra Nevada mountains the wind gets better and more dependable, the water looks nicer and all that. You can generally count on the wind in December, but finding girls at night is way more difficult. No one is going to La Guajira for the mongering. In my opinion, you are probably safer in most of the spots east of Rio Buritaca, as long as you know some of the locals, than you are at Cienga or Peurto Colombia. The value of isolation and the wind play in your favor for having a good time on the water, but at night you're going to be counting stars.
So, it depends on how you want to spend your time. If you are interested in being active during the day, enjoy sports that involve the wind and water, want a lot of options at night and you speak a little Spanish, Cartagena is worth looking into.
Overall point. For many people, the comparision between Cartagena and Medellin is not the right comparision to make. Cartagena is a Caribbean city. If you want girls from Medellin, the best place to find them is Medellin. It may be the best spot if you are only interested in chasing paisas and looking for good value, although I imagine that is a debatable point. If you want a place by the sea, with girls from all over Colombia and some from Venezuela, Cartagena strikes a great balance.
