Electrostate vs. Petrostate: No "fossil fuel baseload" in SA and GB...
Nepalese believe in their government! My fellow citizens do not!
Like the elephant that sits in the room you consistently fail to address that the sun does not always shine nor the wind always blow. There for you need a base input into the grid of 40% to keep it stable.
As for the "elephant in the room", tell that to South Australia (SA) and Great Britain (GB), even China and California to a lesser degree, who have rewritten how they grids are formed and operate, and have "flipped the switch" on this "fossil fuel baseload" fallacy. As of today, both SA and GB, have renewables supplies of 75%-80% and 80% (respectively) of annual demand, with gas peaker plants and interconnectors, used only as backup during rare peaks or when renewables dip.
Comparing building a heavy rail project and an energy project of any type is a useless. There is hostility toward big government projects these days. Privatize everything and let business handle it. That is the mantra of the MAGA numbskulls.
While your opening post's headline and closing statements, nicely incorporates the correct sentiment of my post, this statement (above) get it all twisted. The Nepalese vs. California comparison was NEVER about comparing projects, but more so about comparing the fortitude of their "conviction" and "will power", of gov'ts and governing bodies to get the project done, given the various political climates that they both operate in. (ie. Electrostate vs. Petrostate: Nepalese Conviction vs. American Backsliding Hubris?)
So while I disagree, it may or may not be "useless" to compare a HSR project with a energy project (depending on specifics), the California HSR project serves as good foil/comparison for the Texas HSR and a reminder for Elvis 2008, that it wasn't just California, that seem to have fallen to this trap of cost over runs, delays and mismanagement, when it comes to HSR in America.
Or that maybe, it's the symptom of a bigger problem, one in which I think you've commented on, numerous times...including in your opening and closing statements.
I thought that sound I heard, sounded familiar this last weekend...

The same way Trump made a total crap mess of a surrender to the Talaban in Afghanistan, agreed to release 5,000 America-hating jihadists into the country, one of which strapped a suicide bomb vest on to kill 13 of our military personnel in an attack that was judged later to have been "unpreventable" given the circumstances Trump set up, including giving the Talaban full control of security and time tables, and then he passed the only difficult part of it to Biden to "get it done".
It is the Classic Repub Pattern; create a shitsorm of crap results, pass it on to the incoming Dem to clean it up and take all the heat for the inevitable pain of inflation or deficit spending to pull us out of it, rinse and repeat, rinse and repeat.
And this bit about Trump / Repubs declaring Blue cities with 30-50 year low crime rates "hellholes of out-of-control crime" is the flip side of the Classic Repub Pattern; see the trajectories heading in the exact right direction thanks to Dem policies and stewardship and rush in with some utterly useless, counterproductive plan and then take undeserved credit for where Dems were already taking it! Seriously. You can relax in your bizarre concern about what I or anyone else would think if Trump "found a cure for cancer".
Or even if he took perfectly normal steps NOT to lay the groundwork for, usher in and exacerbate any opportunistic deadly viral spread into a Pandemic he can dig up.

It isn't that I blame Trump exactly
So along with the pandemic and Texas floods, we can add cancer to your list of things that are Trump's fault. How about why STDs and obesity are Trump's fault too?
He would deserve it for sure. Thing is you wonder if Hiliary is saying that to stay out of jail. LOL.
I blame the people who could have but did not vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016 for the 1 million American deaths, the millions of jobs wiped out, school and business closures, spike in inflation m, etc from Trump's Pandemic.
Trump was a known and obvious America-hating, Know Nothing conman back then as much as now. So he can't help producing crap results. It's the only thing he is capable of doing.
It was his voters who are really to blame for his Worst President in History Results.
Just as it will be those who could have but did not vote for Kamala Harris who will deserve the blame for every cancer death that could have been averted if not for Trump defunding the research and facilities necessary to avert them. And for the 23% increase in the cost of many products Americans buy. And the fact that the average price of a gallon of regular gas stopped declining dramatically and steadily as soon as Trump started promising his high tariffs if he got elected. And so on.
Electrostate vs. Petrostate: SA and GB renewable grids...
You do realize that all you did was confirm what I said was correct. I will stipulate to your numbers.
No, I don't think I did! I think we just see "baseload" differently, given I don't really apply the term to "renewable grids."
Please don't insult my intelligence and tell me there are not powered by fossil fuels. I am glad technology has allowed for a lower base load demand.
The SA and GB grids are mainly powered by renewables, with fossil fuel inputs, used as peaker plants, to fill-in with demand spikes or high demand periods.
Renewable grids, like SA and GB, consider the fossil fuel industry's "baseload" as an outdated terminology, that doesn't necessarily apply to a modern grid with a high penetration of renewables, batteries, and smart management systems, that can be just as reliable as the old "baseload" model grids.
Spidy can you tell me what is your bottom line point / issue?
The SA and GB grids are mainly powered by renewables, with fossil fuel inputs, used as peaker plants, to fill-in with demand spikes or high demand periods.
I will stipulate to the above statement. Your original post said 20% powered by fossil fuels. So, by saying mostly you continue to make my point. Renewables can be used to power a HUGE portion of a grid. But not all. FACTS!
Renewable grids, like SA and GB, consider the fossil fuel industry's "baseload" as an outdated terminology, that doesn't necessarily apply to a modern grid with a high penetration of renewables, batteries, and smart management systems, that can be just as reliable as the old "baseload" model grids.
Take the fossil fuel inputs out of the loop and see what happens.
Learn how to take a win Spidy. You are arguing semantics. I am stating reality. Remember I run my own personal electrical grid and I do the exact same thing. I have gasoline powered generator back up when Solar fails to charge my batteries to sufficient capacity for my use case.
Case Closed!
Now care to tell me how any of this is applicable to the Dis-United States of America. I country who nether has the political will not support of the population to switch from being location where the majority of power generated by fossel fuels to one that is mostly powered by renewables. The Dis-United States of America received a tremendous oil shock in the 70's and did nothing about it then. They do not face the same immediate consequences now. So what makes you think anything is going to change. MAGA from Texas saying nothing good can be done in the government. All the while praising the MAGA executives in charge of states and the federal government why saying those who do not think like him are idiots.
Meanwhile the MAGA from Texas fails to recognize that the current cold civil war (about to turn hot) that driven mostly by wealth inequality and the middle class losing their assets.

Electrostate vs. Petrostate: Are big projects like HSR and Nuclear...WORTH IT?
Of course, being a lying Democratic douche, you leave out the other red state of Florida.
Yeah, Florida costs were kept low, by using existing rail corridors. This is not the case in California HSR or Texas HSR, for a proper comparison.
But what about Texas? The Texas rail project was set up by a private Japanese consortium and they not taxpayers lost $250 million on the deal before selling it off. ... The feds want to pour in money and Republican governor Rick Scott says no.
Yeah, now that the Japanese have high-tailed it outta Dodge, due to the delays, dysfunctional progress and budgetary mismanagement, the Texas HSR project fiasco, is now looking to the feds and taxpayers, to bankroll a major part the project. (...kkkk!)
If you look at these three examples and conclude more taxpayer money needs to be spent on HSR, you are nuts, but everyone knows how crazy you are anyway.
To answer your question, look no further, than the gov't and energy industry's "granddaddy of all boondoggles",...building large scale nuclear power plants and SMRs, and you can decide for yourself, just like HSR, does the "...end justify the means" and are these big projects, WORTH IT!!
