Chaing Mai – my experience:
I have visited Chiang Mai 3 times in the past. The last time I was there was in 2011. I come away thinking it is a nice town worth exploring for a few days. Walking around, seeing the temples and the sights, eating great food including Khao Soi and northern Thai sausage, and buying a couple of made to order Ikat knitted shirts; these are all must do's. I also think of Chiang Mai as the gateway to Thailand's Hill Country. There are some great treks in the region to remote villages through spectacular scenery. There are also a couple of great motorcycle or car circuit trips. I once took 10 days to complete the Mae Hong Son circuit and I had a really good time. Doi Inthanon National Park is beautiful. Personally, I like Mae Hong Son better than Chiang Mai, but that is just me because I prefer the smaller, quaint, provincial town over the big city.
I consider Chiang Mai a BYO Girl kind of place. Here is why:
On a scale of 1 to 10 where I would rate Go Go's like Baccara (BKK) , Rainbow 4, and What's Up solid 9 Stars and Suzy Wong, Airport, and Sapphire solid 8*; I would have to rate Foxy Lady 2 stars and I think I am being charitable giving the place 2 stars because in the three times I have gone there over a span of a couple of years, I always found the girls rather unattractive and uninterested in being there. Maybe I was there at the wrong time or wrong day, but I doubt it.
I never have gone to any of the Chiang Mai massage parlors so I won't say anything about them since I do not have firsthand information to offer, but I will say that I have yet to read a really positive field report on any of them. If anybody reading this wants to take one for the team and sample the action; I say go for it man. We would all love to hear about your experience.
During my visits to Chiang Mai, I have wandered up and down Loi Kroh Road many times. The small bars that line the street are friendly. If you are thirsty stop into one and have a Singha. You never know when you might get lucky. One night I was walking down Loi Kroh towards the night market. I spotted three girls coming towards me. One of the girls was a stunner. I smiled and said hello to them. The girls all smiled back and they gave me the Wei. I asked the good looking girl where she was going and she giggled and pointed out one of the little bars I had just passed. Then she invited me to accompany her there. Naturally I could not refuse. So I bought a round of beers for the girls and chatted / flirted with the stunner. She was very nice and I barfined her ST. This was in 2011 so I have forgotten what I paid. I remember that it seemed very reasonable at the time, but whatever it was, it is probably not the going rate today and not relevant to the discussion at hand. The relevant point is that yes, I succeeded in picking up a quality girl in Chiang Mai. But, I consider myself pretty lucky to have found her and I would not count on my good luck occurring every trip.
And so I stand by my impression that Chiang Mai is a BYO girl kind of place. And I think any punter can have a great time here with a good girl by his side. Enjoy the scenery, buy some quality Ikat weavings, eat some great northern Thai cuisine, and take your girl on a mini road trip. I know you will have a great time. I know the next time I visit Chiang Mai I will be bringing M, my favorite BKK girl, along. We will spend a couple of days in Chiang Mai, I will buy her some dresses, and then we will head out to Mae Hong Son and the country for about a week. I am looking forward to this 'romantic' little holiday.
Thank you for this very informative report.
This is more or less based on the same lines as the points I have been trying to make.
I have lived in Chiang Mai for many years and have nothing against the place, it can still be a Utopia for those who wish to retire here. But over the years the night-life and commercial sex scene has fallen into decline and all I am doing is making mongers aware of this, considering that this is the International Sex Guide forums and not another type of Trip advisor or Lonely Planet.
