On the street, gringos do 'quick' conversion. You want to convert 20.000 COP into dollars. As a rule, a lot of gringos cut the number in half (10000) and remove the last three zeros. 20.000 COP is about $10. This is a quick and somewhat effective way of knowing what you've got for cash.

Of course, it is not completely accurate. If you want to make it more close to the real conversion rate you drop 10 percent from the 'final' number. 20.000 is closer to $9 than $10.

The good news is this has not changed that much over the past year and a half. That is, even though the dollar has significantly devalued against the Euro, it has not moved much against the peso. 20.000 COP was worth $8.73 in late October 2005 and it's worth $9.08 today.

I had conversation with one of the La Dolca Vita girls concerning negotiations and currencies. She was saying she would rather be paid in dollars than in pesos. This stumped me since I was thinking it really does not matter what you are paid in, it's all the same in the end. If I pay you 130.000 COP or $59 I've pretty much given you the same amount of money.

But that was not her point. Her point was that people negotiate in easy numbers and if she deals in pesos, she might cut a deal with a gringo for 200.000 COP which is $90, but if she deals in dollars, it's probably $100. I believe she was a little smarter than the average girl in LDV. Sexier, too.

In any case, if you are into negotiating positionally with these girls you might be at an advantage keeping this table in mind. It may let you flip between currencies more effectively.

That's interesting. Currencies move around. If you take the five year picture, instead of the four, the decline is about 5 percent, since the dollar jumped from around 2300 to 2900 in 2002 and has been moving generally down since then.

The rapid conversion is now: Take the "thousands" and divide by two i.e. drop the last three digits. If you want better accuracy, then subtract 10%.
