I don't have some kind of high and mighty rugged individualist attitude, I believe the majority of people should have nice lives, ie. Be working less and enjoying themselves more and I don't think that's unrealistic. So many people who have been successful seem to have a high and mighty pull yourself up by your bootstraps attitude, which I never had, and find quite abominable. Many European countries are going to shorter work weeks which I think is great, but Americans seem to be working more and more, which isn't good for the individual or those who choose to have a family.

But it's not hard to find out that many of the same people telling you that didn't actually do it their own damn selves to get to where they were. They were born with certain advantages and able to move in certain circles that most ordinary people could not. And yet, they arrogantly proclaim they made it on their own, and implore the less fortunate to just keep their heads down and work hard (often for them to make them "the man" rich) going only with self-reliance. But as you get older and experience more of life, you come to realize that so much of what they told you isn't totally true. And yet the cohesiveness of society, the maintenance of your dignity and sanity, and the ability to keep going demands of faith in certain core principles and beliefs. Or else, things start to fail and fall apart. And we have anarchy and chaos.

Like you, I made it in our cut throat, sink or swim economic system. Well-educated, well-traveled, and financially comfortable. But it sure the hell wasn't easy. Like I said, the only thing I was given was a hard time! From where I come from, I know better than to think that everybody can just "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" and be OK, and that in fact many hypocritical successful people (often forgetting where they came from) didn't do that themselves if you find out about their backstories. They got some help many of them. In some form or some fashion. Other people need some support as well to have a real chance at having a good life in the United States. Some other countries, particularly some in Europe, do such a better job of taking care of their citizens, which I think it is incumbent upon a government to do. No, I don't support socialism or communism! But, you don't have to be a "pinko commie" to believe that government should and must have an impactful and positive role on the lives of the governed. I believe that FDR is one of a handful of great American presidents for his New Deal policies, recognizing a new and rightful role for government in the lives of American people. He made America a better place for the everyday man while standing up to and defeating facism. That's my kind of president!

Life is difficult for many and no matter what you want your economy to be, many dirty jobs need to be done. The question of relevance is, "who is going to pay for it?" If you want all the things you speak of, fine so be it. Your taxes are going to be raised significantly, maybe over 50%-55%. Between my property tax, sales tax, and income tax I am probably close to 35%-40% already. I am using myself because I am average American mas o menos. Between car payments, mortgage, insurance, health care, taxes, union dues, pension contribution, FOOD, I barely have anything left over for myself and my travels LOL. I really can't even afford more in taxes, so no I don't want my taxes to go up for more services for my country. People can find a job and work and pay their way just like I did and let me keep my money. That is my opinion on it.

Now if Americans change their mind and vote in a candidate who is going to pass news laws and change that, I will respect that decision. But as of now I don't see that happening any time soon.

Also, boot strap attitude makes America go round. It does make me a bit sick to hear guys beat there chest about it too, but it is still something which should be respected and it is important.
