I asked ChatGPT which ATMs were best for foreigners in Jakarta.
According to ChatGPT, BNI, Bank Mandiri and BRI have transaction limits as high as 5 million. In this thread we have usually been complaining ATMs will give you no more than half that sum. Has anyone here here been lucky enough to get 5 million from these ATMs?
I stress more about money logistics these days than anything else as payment means often turn out the limiting factor, especially since getting replacement for credits cards is not as straightforward in my case as it is for some mongers who live in the same country as their issuing bank.
Most ATMs I used while there had a limit of 1.2 million IDR in 100 k bills or 1.25 million IDR in 50 k bills. Including BNI, BRI, Link, and the 2 ATMs at classic. There is however no limit to the amount of transactions you can do. So as long as your card issuer doesn't charge any fees you can just do back to back transactions (4 times of the 1.25 million) to get to thrle 5 million you want. That being said 5 million actually would be like a brick of cash especially if it was in 50 k notes. There is no reason to need that much cash all at once unless going to 1001 or emporium but they accept cards from what I understand. Most the time 1 million per day was sufficient during my stay and I would pref6 the blue 50 k notes as opposed to the red 100 k notes because when paying for a 30 k lunch at a cheap local restaurant or the street food tents, they wouldn't always have change for the 100 k note and then you are sitting around waiting for them to go get change, just like using a 100 k note in Colombia.
My advice would be to just take out 1.25 million in 50 k notes and carry that on you for the day and for any large purchases such as 1001, emporium, etc use your debit card or credit card to pay.
Gabacho.
