I don't want to scare you off, but these things do happen from time to time, so you need to be aware of them and protect yourself. Everyone else who lives in the building will know that the apartment you are staying in is rented to foreign tourists, and foreign tourists have a habit of carrying large amounts of valuables, etc., etc. Unless of course, you are a poor American tourist, and all you have are Dollars, in which case no one will bother you (LOL) . You just need to exercise some discretion, that's all.

Nope, they got Warsteiner on tap for something like 160R for 0. 5L, and the food ain't half bad either. As for the ladies, my friend and I had a couple bleach-blondes sit down with us. One was short, cute, pixie-ish and maybe a little too tan. Her friend was taller and had a killer bod. Long legs and perfectly shaped C-cups. But with a nose that could sink the Titanic. After about 30 minutes of drinking and chatting, they asked about our plans. We told them that we were just warming up, and that we'd be hitting some clubs next to go dancing and asked if they'd be interested in tagging along. That's when they asked: "Well, how about sex? " as if there were any question that they we were working (incidentally, there were some regular girls there that night, but in larger groups). Went last mounth from Moscow. Fortunatly I have my private driver, cause the taxi service regolar or not are really dangerouse drive so fast!

And they still ask a lot of money and they doesen't speak english (got bad experience 5 years ago in the winter time)

Now I'm first in line to get some of their sympathy in return.

Another member recommended I abstain from taking a lot of cash with me and simply withdraw from ATMs instead. This would make me less of a target, I assume, but it leaves a couple of questions:

(1) Do places like Hot Dogs require payment in dollars, or are rubles just fine?

(2) If you need dollars, can you find ATMs that dispense dollars in Russia? (I have never seen an ATM that dispenses a foreign currency, but I suppose it could be possible in Russia).

In fact, for most things and most places you can ONLY pay in rubles. Don't expect to pay in foreign currency at any shops or restaurants. You can't. Hookers don't care whether you pay in dollars, Euros or rubles. I tend to get the best deals in rubles, but there is little difference in paying pros.

2) ATMs work just fine and the exchange rate is quite OK. A lot of them dispense dollars and/or Euros as well. But again, you really shouldn't need dollars for anything.

3) None of the apartment services care about your hoing activities as long as you don't trash the place.

The official currency of Russia is the Rouble, that's what most businesses will expect. So, you will need to convert your Dollars to Roubles. Used to be, many Russians would be happy to take Dollars, but now, no one wants to hold a currency that is losing value every week. I think Russians will be more likely to take Euros, if anything.

Don't know if Russian ATM's dispense Dollars, I have yet to find an ATM in Moscow that will take my U.S. bank ATM card, and give me money in return. Maybe you will be luckier than me. But then, if your time in Moscow is limited, do you really want to run around town looking for an ATM?? Not to mention all the extra fees that both banks will charge you to withdraw money, assuming you do find one.

I'm not sure what is Rick's position on the mongering scene, I've never discussed it with him, but the Moscow Star apartments are very well located and, as I recall, they all have safes for your valuables. Just excercise a little common sense, like you would in New York, or any large metropolitan area. It's just part of the territory.

And please.... please, please, please, stay away from Hot Dog's. With all the possibilities in Moscow, this is just a waste of time and money.

Internet is hit or miss (although fairly reliable actually) and not THAT much cheaper if you are looking for 2-3 hours.

All other options such as strip clubs or gentlemen clubs (like Shandra) are either even more cost-prohibitive or only provide on location fucking, which isn't my bag, baby. I like the girls in my own bed for a couple of hours of fun. Regrettably, Moscow is nearly unaffordable in this regard and ho-ing in Moscow has become a rare treat for me now. I always use the ATM’s’ my preference is at a hotel but do use banks if needed. Seems like there are ATM’s every hundred feet or so on the busier streets.

Most will give you the choice of rubles and sometimes Euros. I prefer to negotiate in rubles.

Yes you do have to pay a transaction fee. Whether converting $100 dollar bills, using a credit card or ATM it’s unavoidable. One way or another you pay to convert cash.

Your problem with being unable to extract cash from an ATM in RU actually is based at home. Even with notifying my bank and their fraud department of my travel itinerary they will on occasion shut the card down. Citibank is the worst at this. All the US banks are worried about fraud in RU.

My solution is to always travel with 2 different bankcards and 2 credit cards.

Nothing worse than running out of money whilst whoring.
