They probably have 1 or 2 regular guys (usually married) who pay them a stipend so they are just fine financially. They obviously can't see the married guys at night so they just hang out with their friends. They will off course go with other guys but money won't be the motivating factor.

And you can spot the girls who are "already committed" quickly, they will be dancing a lot with other girls and not with guys, and when guys approach them they usually don't flirt. (I say usually because sometimes these girls still sell drinks) If you hang out with a group of Thais or Pinays for a bit they will tell you what each of the other's is up to.

But when I got to your post it all made sense. I too have met a few girls who make a living on drinks, but it is a rare talent. Occasionally you meet someone who can pull 15-20 drinks in a night. I will usually buy her a drink (supporting the bar too) or slip her HK$50 if I just want to toss her back. If I am with someone for the night of course then I buy as well, but probably not "lady’s drinks" (Margareta, Kailua and milk, or, God forbid tequila-rock-and-roll). With the "lady’s drink the girls get a commission. If you watch carefully, after they are served the waitress will come back and discretely slip the girl a ticket, which she can later trade for some money. I think it is HK$20, but not sure. This whole commission thing is supposed to be between the bar and the girls, secret from the guys. If you get involved in it the bar people will get surly. A few weeks ago I was with a girl who was new. After the drink we wanted to go to another bar, but I had not seen the waitress slip her the chit. I asked and my girl did not understand the system. I suggested she ask the waitress in Tagalog how it worked, but the waitress did not come back. Finally I just asked one of the waiters to get her the ticket. The guy got angry and started talking very sternly to the girl. Then he waived to the waitress who brought a HK$20 and gave to the girl, but everyone seemed mad at me, and at the girl. So it is best to pretend that you don’t know what is going on.

Usual drink prices (standard drink or beer) are about:

• Your drink: HK$ 40
• Her drink (lady’s drink): HK$60
• Her drink (not lady’s drink): HK$40
• Her drink (she buys own): HK$20

Happy hour drinks are about half. It has happened quite a few times that when I am with a girl several times, and she likes me, she will start saying that she will buy her own drinks, I should save my money. The underlying message is that as a GF I am already taking care of her and we should be more careful with "our" money. LOL

As for tequila-rock-and-roll at Fenwick, it just pisses me off. It costs twice a usual lady’s drink, basically it is a way to supercharge the movement of funds from your bank account to the girl and bar. None of the Lady’s drinks have much alcohol – could you drink 15 real drinks in a night and still work? With tequila-rock-and-roll they get one glass of [imitation] fruit juice and a separate shot of tequila. It is really one real drink in two glasses.

You might as well hand over your ATM card, or wear a name tag that says sucker. If I offer a girl a drink and she orders a beer or other non-lady’s drink I think, hum, girl friend experience. (Maybe this is not fair as they do have to earn a living. And girls who do this tend to be the Thais who are more confident in ultimately pulling a customer.) When the girl orders a "lady’s drink" I think, well I am helping her kids in school, sick parents, etc. I won’t usually do more than one or two of these before I think I should be paying her something directly and not supporting the bar. But, when a girl orders tequila-rock-and-roll, I feel insulted. She does not like me, she does not respect me. She is in cahoots with the bare to scam me. She is bold faced taking money out of your pocket without giving you anything of value in return, and waiting to see if you have the courage, or are not too drunk, to realize she is hustling you. You are not a BF and not even a customer, you are a mark.

Last time it happened I was with this totally cute, totally self assured Filipina. I told her to order what she liked. When the drinks came it was five tequila-rock-and-rolls. She had taken the liberty of ordering for her and her friends. I was so angry at myself for letting my guard down, letting them take advantage of me by treating me like a sucker that I told the waitress to take the drinks back, and kissed the girl good bye. She laughed, probably thinking Cheap Charlie. But at least I had s bit of self esteem, and HK$500, left.

Don’t let some 22 year old prostitute treat you like a chump. Every time I see a guy getting suckered into buying these I want to take him outside and give him a lecture. So here you have it. Instead of several tequila rock and rolls, save your money and go short time. That is what you both really want. You will be much happier. You have been warned.

Like the drinks prices, I have trouble seeing the pattern as to exact pricing, so am always a bit surprised. In Wanchai I usually use Ming Court or Beverly.

Ming Court is located on the north side (same and block as Bridge, but towards the eastern end) of Lockhart Road. It is cheap and cheerful. It costs about HKD230/2 hours prime time HKD130/2 hours off peak (afternoons?). I actually know someone who comes in from Shenzhen for R&R on weekends, and he sleeps there over night. I don’t know the rate. The rooms are very small some have well placed mirrors (walls and ceilings). Sometimes hot water, sometimes not. The bathrooms are tiny, with the Asian-style hand shower over the toilet. Always give a single condom (in case you forget). They are pretty strict about time. About 15 minutes before time’s up you will get a call. Then 5 minutes, then when it is up, then about every 2 minutes! This will definitely not impress the girls, but it is functional.

Beverly is a bit more upscale, though still zero stars. The rooms are much larger, some 3 times the size of Ming Court, as are the bathrooms. It seems to rent for HKD330/2 hours. Real bathrooms with a tub. Hot water generally ok. If you go after midnight the rate is HKD380 until noon the next day, pretty good value. Some rooms have little mirrors angled in the ceiling (I find myself moving the girl around trying to place her where I can see her). Problem with staying overnight is that there is a lot of noise. I don’t know if it is the restaurants below or construction (in the middle of the night), but you keep getting woken up. Aircon can be difficult to figure out and TV has about 5 channels, if you can find them, 2 porn and 3 local Chinese. By the way, if you like Korean food, the restaurant below has a pretty good value barbeque buffet. Girls used to Ming Court like being taken here. It is not the Shangre La, but is ok. And if you take the room till noon, she can sleep the night through even after you leave.

I have used hotels in Causeway Bay, across the street and up the hill from Sogo, but none I would recommend. Same in Mong Kok. In both cases I was "dating" girls who work in HK (Domestic Helpers), not Wanchai girls.

The options for a foreigner are:

1) Wanchai: most of the places you want are either basement or second floor places of Lockhart and Jaffe Road, between Fenwick Street and the Wanchai MTR station. Google"centamap" to find the roads.

Street level bars, either girlie bars (a rip off) or the ones where the locals and expats hang out. You can tell the difference as the girlie bars will have girls, sometimes old women, out front trying to drag you in. Be assured you will be fiscally abused. In the legit street level bars there are few working Girls, but some, and these can be a good time out with play-for-free if you are skilled.

The Wanchai discos and bands. : Neptune, Fenwick, Amazonia, New Makati, Laguna, Dreams, Galexy, Spicy Fingers, Dusk till Dawn, in decreasing order of available girls. The latter two are more legit, but ok bands and certainly some working girls. Note that many of these places have doormen and a sign saying HKD200 cover. Just walk past like you own the place, if you are western, and not navy, they won't stop you. On the Tsim Tsha Choi side Sticky Fingers, across from the science museum is similar

2) Lan Kwai Fong: two streets of upscale expat bars. Some ok bands. Mostly trainee bankers and lawyers, and girls that want them. Interestingly if you hang out in Neptune a few nights, then go to LKF, you will see some of the same girls exploring like you.

3)141, these are buildings usually full of working girl flats. Tends to be about HKD400 for full service 30-60 minutes. Girls are mostly mainland Chinese, and many quite beautiful. Google: "141 main page" or "161sex". Just go and knock on the door. Most don’t speak English, but are willing. There are places in Causway Bay, near your hotel.

There are other options but it get’s more complicated.

mj[/quote]if you are talking about the ground level bars on lockhart road, it has been a few years. these places seem to have more uniformly beautiful girls, all early to mid twenties. i believe that the difference between these and the discos or bars with bands is that the girls are employees rather than free lancing tourists or domestics looking for extra money. i believe that the girls are brought in on working visas as "cultural dancers", thought you got to believe that someone in immigration smiles every time he see the term on a visa application.

in fact i lost my "bar girl" virginity to one about 15 years ago. i think it was dragon bar near fenwick. her name was christie and boy what a gfe she was. i was in love. i think it cost me about hkd4, 000 including bar fine and drinks. at the time i was so captivated by this girl i thought it was a bargain. lol of course i know now that for that price i could have flown to manila and had a similar experience lasting month.

when i was last in one of these bars, there were very cute thai or filipino – and some of the bars specialized – girls dancing behind the bar in bikinis. occasionally they will take off their top. they would get you into the bar with a hk$20 beer, usually not good. then the girls would come round. they are quite aggressive about grabbing your crotch and making you feel right at home. i have had them quickly open my pants, asking to see my "little brother".

their business model is to sell drinks, which i think were hk$240 and bar fine, which ranged from hk$2, 000-4, 000. i think there were price lists on the wall, but these are negotiable.

the only angle i have seen is to insist on buying, not the hk$240 drinks, but the discounted $120 drinks. when you ask for this the mamasan will say something like "how do you know, you live in hong kong? " and then get one. be careful that they then don’t up the rate at which they bring the drinks to offset the lower price. buy the drinks very slowley. also be careful to buy for one girl, two if you like, but that you are not being suckered into buy drinks for the group.

my observations:

•all prices are negotiable, but still high

•you can limit your spend by ordering discounted drinks and for just one girl

•you can take the girls out, negotiate discount for bar fine but it will still be much more expensive than a free lancer in neptune

•you can get a pretty good hand job right at the bar if you buy drinks, and you don’t mind others chatting with you while you do.

•often they have a "private room" on site where you can go short time. sometimes this is nothing more than a booth with curtain, or even table surrounded by plants. hj, bj and even boom boom is possible.

one word of caution. a few months back, if i remember correctly, two american business men picked up two filipinas from one of these, and took them back to their hotel for a party. the next day the guys were discovered dead from an overdose. at first the girls were suspect, but in the end they were cleared:

i think hk is truly one of the safest major cities in the world but still need to be careful. in fact the girls have more to fear from us than the other way around. in march some lunatic pakistani began robbing and killing the 141 girls. he killed three or four, depending on whether one was a copycat, in just the few days before the police got him. (got to hand it to the hk police, they did an amazing job).

anyway, use your [big] head. put your valuables, passport and wallet in the hotel safe. i have never seen the police ask a westerner for their passport, only the tourist asian girls. carry only the money you need for the night, maybe hk$3, 000 for drinks, girl, a bite and short time hotel, maybe one credit card.

my sense is that the girls in these bars are quite safe, as are the filippino, thai and indonesian girls in the discos. perhaps the mainland streetwalkers are a bit more dangerous, and i have seen more of these lately.

boy, did i get off topic. anyway, these bars are not good value but maybe you want a change. i know even some of the hardened long time expats sometimes party in these places. so have fun.

Funny you should mention Ming Court. It also has some long term apartments on the upper floors rented out to Thai girls working places like Neptune's and Fenwick's. I remember a Thai mamasan named Pan who ran a boarding house out of Ming Court. Very nice.

This ranks right up there with the dead water buffalo or sick father routine. When these girls get money they are either paying off their agents or sending it back home via western union. This is a very common sob story designed to pull at your heart strings and have you give a wack load of cash to the girl before she gets on the plane.

One of these girls might have a shirt stolen in a boarding house but most of them are very careful with their money.

I moved to Hong Kong a few months ago with my soon to be wife. I've been here before a few times and enjoyed some of the carnal pleasures to be enjoyed but had successfully removed myself from the scene this time, keeping out of temptations way. I let her sleep, and when we finally get back to the flat, we have a drink and start to have a great night. She just cooked breakfast now, and left, on her way back to the ferry. Couldn’t risk being seen with her and I feel bad now as the heavens have opened and its raining hard. Such a gent, I know.

So, for what it’s worth, that’s what I did last night, or who. Sat feeling really bad about doing it, and wanted her out but still have a hard on, and wanting some more. But this is why I will give Wanchai a wide berth from now on. It’s just too easy, and when you are there, you might as well accept that you are going to be unfaithful.

Then all those other places the I frequent in lan kwai fong. Those were the days. With the opening up of China. It is just so much cheaper to monger across the border in Shenzhen. Just a few train stations away. So much cheaper. I like the prc stock better than the pricey ones in hkg. Now I do very little of it Hong Kong. Taipei is just as pricey.
