I am a regular customer. He looked my record up and saw what I paid last time and he said oh yeah. You will get that same rate. Then you will be lucky if they even have cars. Wasn't thinking when I was in SD in December and went to rent a car. Guess what. Holidays. Many people in town. No cars. Finally found one at Dollar and it cost me $60 / day. It was the last car they had left.

My suggestion is to rent from Thrifty or Avis I always get the best deals from them. Join Thrifty's blue chip program (discounts) and look up on retailmenot. Com for coupon codes. You can get significant discounts.

This is a trip report from April 2nd. Sorry for the long delay, I've just been lazy.

Like many people who come to Sosua, the girls I took were from either Rumbas, D'latins or on the street in front of these places.

The first girl I met on Wed April 2nd was Janet who was 20 years old. She was short, black hair, pretty face and kind of dark skin. I think she asked for 2000 but I stuck to 1500 for short time. I was staying at plaza Europa again which was fine for me. The girl Janet seemed to be kind of a dud or inexperienced or just not into foreplay much. She was cute and had a nice body (couldn't tell she had a kid) , but I would not repeat with her. The funny thing is I kept running into her every night. She wasn't pushy even though she suggested I take her again. She was cool about it and even offered up one of her friends. Her friend was okay looking but I didn't come here to have someone pick my girls for me. Plus, birds of a feather flock together so she was probably a dud too.

On Friday night April 4th I met a girl named Carolina in Rumbas. She was very pretty, had long black hair, very light skin and braces. Normally I like blondes but she was very cute with a great body. She was 20 years old and asked for 2500. I asked if she would let me take pictures and she said no. I offered her 1500 but she wouldn't budge off the 2500. I was starting to think maybe the prices had gone up and the 1500 some guys were talking about were some over the hill or desperate chicks. Rumbas was starting to thin out so I figured I'the try my luck at D'latins. D'latins was packed. There was a cute blonde with a Hello Kitty necklace there that I liked. She didn't speak much english but knew enough to tell me 2500. Her name was Eva and she was 24. I again offered 1500, but she wouldn't come off that number. She was with some guy in there earlier but I didn't see him after a while. I thought maybe she was waiting for him or hoping to leave with him. I went outside for a while and met a short petite fake blond named Vanessa (I think). She was 22 and very outgoing. She was with some fat ugly friend (aren't they always?) and suggested a threesome. I said I would give her 1500 for her only. She agreed and we went back to my hotel. She was much better than the first chick and very into it. She let me take pics but no face shots and no nudes.

I think Saturday I just hung out and watch the scene but didn't take anyone. Sunday I decided to check out Caberete. The moto concho guy outside my hotel offered to take me for 300. I probably could have gotten it cheaper but this guy was older and said he doesn't drive crazy because he has 4 kids. Ok, he may be safe but what about all the other drivers coming at us in the other direction? Anyway, I hired him and we went with no major problems except my cap almost flying off and some pretty big potholes. Caberete was nice and more built up with condos and stores than Sosua. It was much windier though hence all the windsurfers. I stayed there a few hours, had a pizza then started looking for a way to get back to Sosua. The taxi stand had their prices in dollars and it was $15 back to Sosua. I didn't want to take another moto concho so I was just walking down the ave hoping to find an independent taxi I can negotiate with. So a minivan with the sliding door wide open rides by slowly with a guy riding on the running boards. I ask if he is going to Sosua. He says 'yes', I say 'how much? ', he says 50. So I go to get in and realize there are literally 20 people in some 1990's minivan. I guess it's a little better that the moto concho except that I am sitting in the seat closest to the open sliding door. The tires felt like they were half inflated and would blow out on the first dip in the road. The minivan was packed but they actually picked up two more people. One of them, a young 20 year old guy gave up his seat to an older lady who got on. He promptly went to the only spot left which was on the outside running boards with they guy who collects the money. I felt like the van was going to blow out its tire and flip on its side like in the beginning of The Flintstones when fred orders a huge rack brontosaurus ribs and it tips over his car. The only thing that put my mind at ease was when the van tips over, the two poor saps on the running boards will cushion me from falling out of the van while they use their bodies as human brake pads. Luckily, that never happened and when I got off at my stop suddenly I felt good because I saved like 450 pesos.

After I took a nap I went out to Rumbas and met a blonde named Ericka. She was 25 with a nice petite body with some curves. She asked for 2500 but I offered 1500. Eventually she agreed. Off we went to my hotel. She was really cool and good in bed. Before we started I put on a porno on the TV and it was of a blonde chick blowing a guy. When she came out of the shower she saw it and pointed at the blonde chick and said 'she is me, and he is you'. Then she started blowing me. I had a great time with her.

On Monday and Tuesday I went out to Rumbas but did not see much to my liking. It was either much less girls from the weekend and / or it was a bunch of the same girls I already saw. I had some offers from some okay girls but I kept looking for something better and ended up going home alone. Wednesday I went back early determined to take the first okay girl I saw. I saw Ericka again and decided I needed to grab her now before she disappears with someone.

Ericka was even better than the last time. She let me take pictures, but no nudes and asked that I don't put them on the internet.

That was the extent of my mongering. What I left out was just how nice and relaxing the beach is and how good the water is. I went to the beach every day. Staring out into the water you can't help but wonder how great it would be to just hang out at the beach all day, eat some BBQ chicken, take a nap and then have sex with some new 20 year old whenever you felt like it.

Before I knew it, my dream was over and I found myself half asleep getting off the train at the WTC at 8 in the morning following the hundreds of other zombies into their cubicles. What a difference a day makes.

To get to and from Sosua to Cabarete or Puerto Plata, or anywhere along the main road, you don't need private taxis or the guagua which you caught coming back. And anyone who rides a motoconcho along a main road for any distance must have a death wish.

The answer is to take a "carrito publico" (shared taxi running along fixed routes). Very frequent and cheap. 35 pesos to Cabarete. 45 to Puerto Plata. For greater comfort buy two seats. Still much cheaper and safer than a motoconcho (though, as with all transportation in the DR,"safe" is a relative term).

Congratulations on making the effort to get away from the Strip for a bit. Most guys seem to think they will collapse from lack of oxygen if they stray further than 200 yards from Rhumba or D'Latino.

I thought I was on this bus since the fee was similar (35 pesos + 15 pesos for being a gringo). Is the carrito publico run by the government or an actual bus company? Does it say anything on the van / bus / taxi?

The carrito is actually a car (typically a Toyota corolla say. 1980 vintage. So tire wise or lumbering, it may not do much better than your bus). It holds, let me see, six people, other than the driver if you can imagine that. This is the reason Charles is asking you to buy two seats. So two seats in front for say 70 pesos, will get you the entire passenger seat in front. Isn't that a deal? I mean I have tried squeezing my butt in where there was a woman in front but trust me, it ain't no fun! BTW, there is a carrito terminus the other side of where the Metro buses arrive in Sosua. I know cars from there go towards Puerto Plata, perhaps also towards Cabarete? These are all private taxis, under some kind of a syndication I presume and the driver may or may not be the owner.

By the way, I have not seen this Gringo tax people speak of. Perhaps in Sosua, where the suckers are but in normal towns. Not to my experience.

Does it say anything on the van / bus / taxi?[/QUOTE]Don't know the name of the street but a few blocks down from the Police Station and the Playero Supermarket on the main highway is a station with one side having four door sedans going in the direction of Puerto Plata or the other direction towards Cabarette. I think all of the cars are privately owned by the drivers and they get paid a certain amount out of the fares. As I recall it was something like 35 Pesos to Cabarette and 50 Pesos to Puerto Plata. They typically shove 2 passengers in the front seat and 4 in the backseat. You are allowed to purchase more than one seat so as an example you can pay 600 pesos and have the entire car to yourself if you want to go to Puerto Plata but you need to arrange this before getting in the car. The passenger vans don't stop within the stations but basically charge the same fare as the sedans. All of the sedans will have a colored hat on them identifying what there route is. In some instances when I have wanted to travel to out of the way places I have negotiated deals with the drivers. This I found is cheaper than hiring drivers in the "tourist vans" that have sky high prices. I hope this helps.

Good info Surfer, except the usual charge for hiring the whole publico to Puerto Plata centre or Field of Dreams is 400 pesos. But 600 would be right to Blackbeards from Sosua.

Of course, if the driver had six passengers traveling to Pto Pta he would take only 6 x 45 = 270 pesos, but they hope to make more than that from the seats earning smaller sums for shorter journeys, so if each seat was used twice for a 30 peso trip that would be 360 pesos.

What's interesting is that you can literally pull aside any driver and for an agreed upon price hire the car and driver for as much time as you want. I did this on several occasions,

I'm posting this here besides the travel announcement section. Will be staying in Sosua between May 29 and June 16 hopefully at Casa Cayena and will be hitting the beach daily. If you sit around all day smoking and drinking, read no further.

If your into kayaking, snorkeling, surfing, and / or swimming and will be in town and want to partake in any of these activities send me a PM. Also going to try kite surfing for a few days as well. I got to have something to do when I'm "leche" depleted!

Bonus is I can pick up local girls sometimes. Apart from nights daytime is boring in Sosua. So I go to Santiago, Puerto Plata etc. If I find a nice girl we go sightseeing during daytime.

Also I like to go visit casinos at the tourist places. Sometimes can meet vacationing girls from Europe.
