I traveled to Paraguay from Salta in Argentina. It was 100 P (Pesos) to get to the Argentinean border (clorinda). I shared a taxi from that Argentinean town to the border (about 10 minutes away by taxi). It cost 7.50P and the taxi will bring you past the bridge to the relevant border office. The first offices you past on the left are for those exiting Paraguay and entering Argentina. If you are not part of a bus from Argentina (i.e. Buenos Aires to Asuncion direct), you will get stamped in to Paraguay in minutes. Direct buses are as good but there may be a 30-40 wait at the border as all bags are checked and all passengers processed. I would not go through Ciudad del Este. What a hole of a town and alot of scams. There are supposed to me a lot of apartments with girls there.

There are buses there (5,000 G) that will take you from the border to Asuncion and they finish at the bus station. It takes about 20-35 minutes. I left my bags at the station before entering town by public bus (2,100G) to find a cheap hotel. There are no hostels and the guidebooks are poor in this area. I finished up after a long search at the Embajador (Presidente Franco 514) hotel. It is pretty poor. Big rooms but no air-con and there were fag butts left in the room and about 100 bars of used soap in the ensuite toilet. The bed was the lumpiest and dirtiest I have come across in South America. I am a cheap Charlie and have used beds in the cheapest of brothels but I was afraid to lie on this one. Still, No need for sheets or blankets because of high temperatures. Air con is a must during the summer as temperatures were 46-50 oc during my visit.

I was sweating, just standing around. Everyone here drinks iced yerba mate. They carry about a 2l bottle of iced water and get their cups filled up with mate and medical herbs on the street. It’s a nice custom. Speaking to the people here, they try and work from 7am to noon and take a very long lunch and try start again. The streets are empty from 11am to 4pm because of the heat. After work, the streets empty again and you rarely see a soul walking the streets after 8pm which is eerie. There are cops on every street during the day. The Hotel was home to about 5-6 streetwalkers and their manager pimp. The girls were nice and plied their trade in the park two blocks away in front of the old Famosa - 5 star hotel that’s currently being renovated (they are calling it Gloria, I think). I first visited the tourist office in centro (Palma 468) and you can get a great free map of the city and with a street index. Getting back to the point about maps is that the city is very well organized into blocks and you will find that three or four apartments are right beside each other (not on the same street) but adjoining streets and Parnell streets. It will save you an awful amount of backtracking. I like walking and only took 1 taxi the week I was in town. They seem Ok (metered) and because the city is so organized, you know if your heading in the right direction.

Apartments – Most are open Monday to Saturday from 9.00am to 9.00pm. Most girls are there all day so its just as good as hitting these places early rather than late. All buildings and streets are clearly marked which makes things easy.

-14 de Mayo 1008 c/Manduvira ("Somos" or "Leon Producciones"). The easiest place to find and an easy walk from centro. Well known and the most expensive experience, I had in AS. I wont not recommend getting mixed up with drugs. I was the only person stopped 2 hours coming back to Buenos Aires. They searched my bags (mine only) for 30 minutes. They kept on asking why I went to Paraguay, saying no tourists go there. I have similar stories from other tourists. It was also hard to find tourist infrastructure like laundry places. I moved from my hooker hotel after two days and moved into a Residential hotel with fan, aircon, ensuite and cable for 40,000 per night.

Antequera Hospedaje - De Angel Domingo (Anyequera c/ Azara) - Only a basic room - I did not bring guests back here but family owned. They even did my laundry for free.

Good points – There are many ATM machines in centro and shopping malls but hard to find outside centro. You have HSBC, Citibank for example. The public bus system is excellent and routes are posted on Windows. I took alot of buses and felt safe. Its a city in which you can easily walk around. Lots of internet cafes but they can be slow. Some fast ones on Chile for 5,000G an hour or there is a 24 hour hour one on Olivia /c Chile called "Cyberking" for 3,000G. Beer is usually Brazilian and a litro was about 7,000G.

The main selling point are the women. The women in the streets are so hot. Sure they don’t have the dress sense of Argentinean women, but watching these girls walking around in hot pants and tight lyra shorts was a pleasure. They are so fit and slim. There are no direct flights, and most itineraries involve a change of planes, and airlines, in Sao Paolo, Buenos Aires, or Santiago. I went to several search engines and couldn't find any fares less than US$1200 from the east coast. Might be a good trip to use FF miles, if you have them.

I think a good strategy for mongering in Asuncion would be as follows: plan your arrival so that you get there on Sunday, when all the brothels are closed. It's a detriment to Paraguay that some police hassle the tourists who are brave enough to venture off the beaten path. Clearly they need instruction on their country's policy regarding tourism. Aside from la policia, I find the people in Paraguay warm and friendly.
