I just came back from the Chinese Embassy. It looks like there are new requirement for entering China for US citizens, starting Aug 1. For example for a tourist visa, they want an invitation letter from a person who is sponsoring you. If no invitation letter, then round trip airline tickets and reservation for hotels are required. A Copy of Airline tickets are no problem. For hotels reservations, I usually stay at low end hotels. I call over the phone or just walk in. There's not website for these low end hotels.

What I am planning to do is book a hotel with website. Print a copy of the receipt or booking. After getting the visa, cancel the reservations. Any comments or suggestions.

I was told by my travel agent yesterday, they randomly pick applications to for a more thorough check. Your visa can be denied because you didn't fill out the forum completely or false information. You have to come back. The first visa is the hardest because they don't have any history and they might do a more thorough check. The second and third are more relaxed. My travel agent had to print out a copy of my airline ticket yesterday.

I did make a reservation at two hotels because they might call to check. I included telephones and addresses. Once I'm in China, I will cancel. The type of hotels, I usually stay don't have any website for booking. There are more of the low end 3 star hotels. I'm also planning to stay a few friend's places. I don't want to put their information down on the application. It's too much trouble for them to write a lettter, scan, email or regular mail to me. They have to include their ID, address, and phone. For business visa, they might have more requirement which I don't know.

Why don't you try coming in via Hong Kong and getting your visa from China Travel Service? I was waiting for a bus to China in one of their offices last week and saw that they are still offering visa services. I do not know the current situation for Americans but I saw a lot of foreigners in there picking up their visas. You may want to check it out next time you are in Hong Kong.

On the other hand, give me a call when you are in China. Hopefully, we can hook-up this time.

I never had to do this either but it seems I will have to next time. Note that every embassy applies the rules differently also. But these days most require all bookings.

Concerning the Visa situation. Why not just get an "F" Visa? You only need to show them an invite, no need for plane tickets or hotel reservations. Invites are pretty easy to come by.

I don't know how it goes for the other countries, but concerning French people, it's becoming more and more complicated to get a VISA, even for the simple one (L visa). Need to provided airplaine ticket (round trip only, if one way = REFUSED) , bank account infos / salary, hotel booking (one night is ok) and filling an application form with tons of questions, that's for the visa L with one entry. If 2 entries (they only give 2 entries max now) need more papers, such as an insurance which cover you 6 month after the end of your visa. The duration of the stay rarely exceed 30 days, if you want to stay longer, it needs special request.

It's sad, when I remember before 2008, everything was so easy.

I arrived at the Chinese embassy in New York at 12:30 after stopping by the Passport Agency to pick up my new passport. The line had about 10 people in front of me. I waited about 30 minutes for my turn. I handed the lady the following:

1. Passport.

2. Passport photo.

3. Copy of passport photo page.

4. Invitation.

5. Completed Visa forms.

6. Copy of my previous "F" visa from my old passport.

The pretty lady looked at it all for about 30 seconds, circled something on the invitation, affixed my photo to my application, explained to me that same day service was no longer available and I would have to return the next day at the earliest. I was at the window for about 2 minutes. She handed me a receipt and I left with a smile saying "thank you." To me, seems like the process was exactly the same as it was 2 years ago, which was the same 3 years ago, and before that, and before that, you get the idea.

The China visa have not change much the last 4 yr look like the NYC embassy is fast, the one in San Francisco is slow like hell I alway tell my friend just paid the travel agent have them do it for you time is money.
