I believe the Thai ATM bank fee is currently 180 baht per foreign transaction, but some US financial institutions will reimburse this fee. And exchanging USD cash at top places get you a better rate than the ATM rate. So basically you can save. 5% to 1% on exchanges by going cash. Not huge money, but it can add up depending on how much you spend.

Example: for a monthly visit $5000 USD x 1% = $50 = 1750 baht = 24 large bottles of Heineken for the room, or a few bottles of your favorite libation, or a couple of nice meals, or a bunch of happy hour drinks, or two visits to L0 litas. YMMV of course.

Yes; there is a security risk carrying cash which has to be weighed against the above.

Sorry you are correct I just assume anyone going to Kinnaree isn't going to not meet the 900 baht minimum. They deduct the 350 baht if your total bill is over 900 baht. A couple drinks for you, a couple of tequilas for your girl, and a 300 baht bar fine puts you over. Taxi is 200 baht if you walk to Soi 4 where the taxi stand is. The motorbikes out front are trying to take advantage of the rain and charge 300. Scam. My ride home was free since my girl drove me home.

Here is another: ATMs might suddenly decide they don't like your card. Last April in Medellin, I was running up and down La 70, trying to find an ATM that would give me cash. Unfortunately, none of the ATMs I went to would accept my card. It wasn't that the ATMs were down. I saw other locals getting money out of them. But, for some reason, none of them liked my debit card. Fortunately, I had brought some USD in cash to exchange in such a scenario. Even more fortunate, the next morning I tried another ATM outside a bank, next door to Masaje Energia, and it gave me the cash, no problema.

Being a guy who would not ordinarily pay a bar fine, I get them to come over after work the same as all the others and shoot them 1000 baht the next morning (really afternoon) when they leave.

I went to 808 with another board member who I met in Colombia. It was his first time in Thailand. As soon as we walked in he tried to walk around the club. Some tour operator said that Bangkok is the place to be and that I can skip Pattaya. That is why I made this blunder of spending little less than 1 day in Pattaya. Got a funny story about cards.

This past summer, I was in Phuket training Muay Thai. I went by taxi from Chalong to Patong. It's about 30 minutes if you are lucky.

I went down to Patong and had a great time. I got hammered, enjoyed the gogo's, and made new friends. I took my cards and some cash with me.

I got back to my room about 2 am And passed out. I woke up in the morning to find that my cards were missing. I fully recall having them in the gogo's, so I assume they fell out in the taxi on the way back.

I'm super lucky that I had cash as a backup, otherwise I would have been royally screwed. I ended up having enough cash to stay for the rest of my trip, but if I had relied solely on cards, I would have starved to death.

I'm also really lucky that no one found those cards and ran up charges on them before I could cancel them.

I've learned my lesson, my cards stay in the room with my passport. Cash in my pockets only! (besides condoms).
