Medellin Reports

I've been to Medellin four times in the last 1 1/2yrs, and have always enjoyed myself, and have never seen anything. But anybody who thinks they can stroll around and act like a jerk, and not think they won't be noticed is kidding themselves. I have always very much respected Tom33's posts, and while I plan to go back to Medellin in July (but only for a few days), I will do what I always do, try and blend in, not go to areas I shouldn't go to, and not kid myself that I am not in Medellin Colombia. Right now, given the economic climate, if the local gang members think there is a buck to be made from an errant gringo, they will certainly try.

You are either a total nut, or you have some hidden agenda! I lived in Cartagena, then it was Cali and when I got to Medellin Paradise it was love at first sight! I have been here going on five years, can live anywhere in the WORLD, and can't stand to be away from Medellin for longer than a week! After 5 years I continue to find new places, new girls, an unlimited supply of women! Medellin has the cleanest drinking water in most if not all of South America, the nicest shopping Malls and Discos, it's the cleanest and the prettiest city in Colombia!

You are one wierd dude guy! You claim you have been living in Medellin for 6 years, yet you are sending everyone to Cartagena! If Cartagena is so great why havn't you been living there for the last 6 years instead of Medellin! I wouldn't even bother responding to you if you weren't so blatently misrepresenting the most fun and the most beautiful city in South America! This has nothing to do with my business, you make me angry because of your warped perception of reality or right out misrepresentation! If you think Medellin is so dangerous and so bad, why don't you just leave! I love my city and I will not have someone misrepresent it thus. Tom33 was strictly recommending Cartagena from a safety standpoint and nothing else. He has lived in both cities and speaks from an impartial viewpoint unlike yourself whose business would be hurt by an exodus of gringos from Medellin. Tom33 is a very well respected poster here. I and many other mongers on this board have learned a great deal from his wealth of knowledge.

Medellin is a wonderful city and I have had many good times there but right now the violence has been turned up a notch and you fucking know it.

Everyone has a right to to speak their mind and voice an opinion on this board and if you have a problem with that then maybe it is YOU that should "crawl under a sink" or whatever...

Frank is clearly hard for Medellin. "If there are any beautiful women in Cartagena they are from Medellin" is something I've only heard women from Medellin say before. Shakira herself could be in the room and I figure a true paisa would still trash-talk the costenas. Frank sounds like he's gone native. I think that's great and I'm looking forward to more of his posts which focus on his experiences in Medellin.

Colombia after all seems to be the only U.S. ally in the region and anyone friendly with America is considered a thorn in his backside. I could see him purposely trying to destabilize the region to take it over. He is friendly with FARC after all, and remember the two countries had a flare up over that killed FARC commander Raul Reyes in where Chavez ordered his troops to amass along the Ven/Colo. border.

I honestly don't think Colombia can count on the U.S. to come to it's aid though because I don't think strengthening relationships with Colombia is on the new administration's agenda as it was with the previous admin.

They definitely cannot count on Brazil.

Just thought I'd share a wonderful evening that I had last night. I went to dinner at a friend's house near the aeroparque in Belén. The barrio may have been Las Playas. That part of Belén can be iffy, but I was with friends-all Colombians. There were maybe 15 to 20 people in and out during 3 hours or so. The front door was wide open at all times.

We left around 9:30 pm. The neighborhood was just crawling with people especially hot young ladies. I don't believe that any were hooking, but many may have been open to a little conversation or more. It made me forget for a moment the state of siege. I dearly hope that we can return to sanity soon.

I find it amusing that Frank touts Mayorista and then calls Cartagena ugly. I checked Mayorista out and it is no paradaise, just a city block of short time rooms and bars. I know firsthand the dangers of Medellin and Tom33 is not bullshitting anyone, just telling the truth. I do not need to defend him but I will say that 5 years ago he graciously helped this newbie on his first trip there and invited me to his place for lunch and intel. Unless he did a 360 he has no problems with anyone visiting Medellin.
