Look, there's no reason to get nasty. First, I'm not an absolute beginner: I have plenty of mongering experience in Western Europe, Turkey and such more "exotic" places to which my business trips have brought me. For reference, see my previous 200+ postings. Secondly, I sometimes feel that I should be walking around with a little badge on my chest saying "English is not my first language". (In fact, it's my third.) Having learned four languages back in high school I have little time for arrogant people who think mastering their native tounge is totally enough - and into this category I include "nasty Americans" alongside with "post-Stalinist Russians", "chauvinist French" and a lot of other people. That said, I don't speak all the 480 recognised, official languages of the globe and, frankly, think it would be appropriate if people in the Moscow nightlife would (also) be capable of speaking a couple of foreign languages. I myself can offer French and German in addition to English, plus a bit of Spanish and a bit of Polish alongside with my native Danish and the two other Scandinavian languages.

First, let me say that I haven't been back to Moscow for more than a year, so my information may not be as up-to-date as the other posts. However, my experience is the opposite of Strav's one: I had better chances with escort than with salons in Moscow when I didn't speak a single word in Russian (but we may not be talking about the same category of escort though).

Concerning salons, I'm not sure they all speak English and, to find their address, you need to be able to read the street name plaques in cyrillic. I needed to learn Russian to go to salons.

The problem is, I did.
