A pub in the US, europe or australia is a place you hang around drunks and degenerates.

I don't think it's changed a whole lot in the last 5 years in terms of girls. I think the proportion of really hot gogo dancers is about the same. It's always been a really small percentage that are really hot. If you're not getting barfined a lot, maybe you have more incentive to work in a factory now. The type of girl that can walk in the bar and has a drink bought within 5 minutes is still around and not going anywhere. Where's a hot, uneducated isan going to work? Getting $2 an hour in a factory instead of $1.30 isn't much of an incentive.

Bars where mongers don't frequent are quite a bit more expensive. Food costs up as well. Your local Pojana has even seen price increases.

And I can think of several, off the top of my head, that serve a nice selection of beers, my favorite being anything from the Stone Brewing Co. The point about the hordes of office ladies is that hordes of pretty girls can now find that it's possible to make ends meet on an office worker's salary. They don't have to hang out in Farang Gulch shouting "Hallo, hansum maannn" to passersby.

Whether anybody wants to admit it, or not, the number of working girls is down substantially. Bars are having a hard time retaining staff and the pretty ones can practically write their own ticket. This most definitely was not the case 10 years ago. It may be anecdotal, but the girls I saw plying their trade yesterday in and around Nana prove the point. 10 years back, these same girls wuld have been mopping the floors or serving drinks. They would have been hard pressed to get any reasonably sober customers!

And the fucking wine here is outrageously priced. Plonk that goes for under $10 a bottle at home goes for $30. And locals are drinking it up.

I was in Udon and Nong Khai over the weekend, visit the GF's relatives, doing the pre-songkran merit making and pouring water on the dear departed's ashes (which is so weird I will never get used to it). We drove over to a huge shopping center that is fairly new. UD World, or some such. Anyway, you couldn't get a parking spot. The joint was packed. 99. 9% Thais shopping, wining and dining. Quite a few fairly nice places to eat, definitely not the food court at MBK.

Had dinner at a fairly nice joint. Wine Society. A bottle of rather low-end (but drinkable) Malbec was just under 800 baht. So, just under $30 for a $15 bottle of wine. Same bottle in BKK would probably run closer to 1, 000 baht. As the evening wore on and the place filled up, I noticed that it was all Thai clientele. They seemed to have no problem throwing down 200 baht per glass for the house swill.

Salaries are up all over the place, even in a relative backwater like UT. A blind man could see it.

I am going to visit BKK again in the middle of may. I think its three years since I went mongering last time. I have been reading a lot about Star of light and I will visit this place for sure. Look at the picture from google street view, am I right if I presume that the bar stools belongs to

Cleo bar, which I have read is a good place to take a look at the ladies sitting outside? And the area where the ladies sit, is it under the stairs? And the bar, is it in the building next to the street?

Yea, what I see out there today would be mopping the floors ten years ago. Back in the day you saw really old dudes with young stunners. Not any more. Now you see the older dudes with gals in their 40s and spending a lot to keep those old dragons up as well. The younger gals are going with the younger dudes, who are hansum and willing to spend.

Friends who live there say it packs out most nights. So, really guys, wake up and really take a look at what is going on in this country. Get out of the Farang Ghetto a bit!

What I find confusing is that Whisky, for example, does not bear the same price increase but is also imported. For example a bottle of single malt Glenmorangie will cost around £25-30 in the U. K and can be bought for 1, 700 baht or £35 in food land. You have to expect an increase for sure. But a £5-7 bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon in the U. K can cost between 800-1000 baht and that is not even form a restaurant, which is more than double the price? Is the import tax on wine way higher than it is on Whisky.

To add to the confusion import tariff's are normally used to protect domestic production. I know Thai Whisky exists but I have never come across Thai wine. Could this possibly be Thai logic raising it's distorted head yet again?

Well, I have found some hard to get to places that are still very pure and pristine. I hope they stay that way for a little while. But I will give a few hints for free here, (1) Northern Laos (2) China-Vietnam border region on China side, ect, it takes special efforts to get to these places, and you definitely need a wing man for the first trip. But for me it is worth the investments so far.

Talking about the lesser and lesser cuties available on the meat market in Thailand, for me, it is quite obvious. 10 years ago, in any bigger massage parlour or gogo bar in BKK, I would have problem picking one, too many cuties, but now I have problem picking one, cannot find a cutie.

Also the prices never stop rising. 10 years ago, average MP sideline cost about 1200-1800, and cuter gogo girls 10 years ago very happy to take 1000 or even less for ST. And the girls' attitude was generally very good.

I was in BKK for a night the other day, first went to Soi Cowboy, tried to bar fine a girl in Shark that I would not take out 10 years ago, quoted me 2500 ST, and then complained my hotel too far, she wanted to go ST hotel, at first I was going to bargain down to 2000, but 2500 plus insisted on ST hotel was too much for me, I could easily imagine her lazy yawn on the bed. Left and went to Thermae, and did not get any better. I tried to pick up a semi-cutie, and she was actually trying to figure out who to go with, some guy before me tried on her, quoted me 2500, but came down to 2000, but again she wanted to go ST upstairs and hurry down to get her second, maybe third round, I was a little disgusted. All these craps made me reminiscent of the old days in Thailand over a decade ago, and make me long for my green pastures across the horizon.
