You don't need a driver to leave Laguito. You can roam all of the Bocagrande Penninsula and all of the Old City on foot, by bus, or by hailing any cab off the street. It is all very safe.
Some guys just can't sit still and always need to be going to the next place. But there are plenty of next places in the tourist zone which includes all of the Old City. The casas are not in the tourist zone. Unless you really know what you are doing, I strongly suggest that you leave the casas alone. At the very least you will get ripped off by the casa and by the taxista.
There is no middle class in CTG. Generally the rest of CTG is poor to very poor. A girlfriend of mine lives in Poco Rojo, one of the poorest barrios in CTG. She tells me that things are getting worse there. Not all of the areas outside of the tourist zone are like Poco Rojo, el Mercado or la Popa. Some parts are a little nicer like Crespo and Manga. However, there is nothing to do in Manga and little to do in Crespo.
If you really have a taste for adventure, try trolling for chicas in el Mercado. They are very cheap as well, maybe 5 or 10K.

Definately sensed a higher desperation in the beach beggars and street male types in Sept. What you say has merit I'm sure and for that is appreciated. I can recall well armed soldiers entering in Casa Marino one evening, they were not menacing but it was not a comforting pass thru.
Perhaps of note to some then, next to Tu Candela there was an upstairs bar w/ balconies, think it is new, it was not very packed but some semi pros were in there I think and they seemed to be going to Tu Candela and then this (no cover) dark bar like in a bit of a rotation. Of course there's a noteworthy cover at Tu Candela. There's Electra but it's late, late night place. Beyond that, at night in the safer areas mentioned I've seen this list. But it is, in part, dated I believe.

That list is a bit dated as you said. La Escollera was torn down 3 years ago. The clubs change names/owners regularly. Isis is one of the newer places in Centro. There are many clubs circling the Clock Tower Plaza. Stroll around. Remember that nothing happens until midnight.

Elektra works than the Cartagena "afterhours" the last place for find pussy in Cartagena. Las Chicas, go there when LDV, tu candela and Diva's is closing. You will find girls at 2.30, if you go before 2.30, probably you will be alone in this disco, except the weekend days. They close at 4 o'clock.
Better try Diva's or Isis, is at 10 meters from Tu candela. The girls from LDV are "pro's" and they are overpriced. Last january Isis was full of pretty paisas.

Giro Matto is closed too, now is a pub called La Quemada, with live music. Great place to go with your girl if you like spanish and latin music live.
