I just got to Brazil today. They were doing random spot checks at GIG Airport this morning. However, in the USA, American Airlines wouldn't even let me check in for my flight without a negative PCR test, and self check in for my flight was not allowed, the machine sent me to a customer service agent to confirm my test results.

It was most likely due to the traffic heading out there at that time, not dangerous, especially pre dark.

I always try to Uber out before 5 pm or after 8 pm from the beach zone, for the traffic congestion reason.
