The amoxicillin in the DR works great. It helps flush out parasites from the water you bathe in and any other bacteria you contract.
It only cost like 200 pesos at any pharmacia
Yes it works OK but it is very dangerous to take it indiscriminately without medical supervision as you will undermine your body's natural resistance. I must admit I have taken more in the eighteen months I have lived in the DR than in the previous 69 years. The doctors and pharmacists here hand them out like M&Ms.

Zithromax is a Pfizer antibiotic you can buy in DR without a prescription, I bought it for my father one time when I traveled with him to DR. It helped abate a respiratory infection, until we got back to the states. Generic version is called Azithromycin.
Hi,
I am thinking of going to DR in the fall, possibly Blackbeards. My Spanish is not really passable, but I want to learn. Do any of you have any recommendation for a book about the kind of Spanish usefull for talking to chicas?
Should I post this to some other tread?
Learn In Your Car Spanish is a set of CDs that come with booklets that is pretty good for learning Spanish. That is what I used and I am fairly fluent now. Your really need to listen and speak rather than just reading a book. You could carry the booklets with you to use as a phrasebook.
Once you get the hang of the pronunciation, a lot of Spanish is quite easy to pick vocabulary wise or understand when you see written, since many words are similar to English, for example policia, dentista, antibiotico, sexo (!). What you really need is the basic greetings, please, thank you, excuse me, how are you, etc. Plus some knowledge of basic common verbs. With the top twenty verbs you can go a long way.
For example if you know how to say "stop!", then it is only a small step to say "don't stop!" which could be really useful in the right circumstances.
Also if you learn a few pattern sentences like "please, where is the nearest bank?" (Por fabor, donde esta el banco lo mas cercano?) you can adapt such basic patterns almost infinitely, for example,"where is the nearest bathroom, pharmacy?","where is the best restaurant?","where is the prettiest chica.
Or take this sentence (from Wikipedia) :
"El uranio natural está formado por tres tipos de isótopos"
You will soon discern that this means "natural uranium is made from three types of isotopes". Now just think how you could drop this into a conversation with a chica."La boca tuyo esta equipado con tres tipos de dientes why una lengua tambien! Me gustaria mucho insertar mi guevo para conocerla mejor." To which she will probably reply with something like: "Mil pesos."
[Your first homework assignment is to figure out what this means. Spanish for homework is "la tarea".]
Another thing that you could do for practice is find passages of news in Spanish, like from a Dominican newspaper Web site, then paste it into Google translator and look to see which words mean what and try to make up your own sentences.
Remember, Spanish is not a hard language and many words are similar to English.
Buena suerte con sus estudios!
Also note you may be able to download that course or other similar courses free of charge via your public libary. Also you make be able to borrow books like Spanish for Dummies to see if you want to buy the book.
Your really need to listen and speak rather than just reading a book.
Here's another learn Spanish quickly plan that I call the rule of 20's. It worked for me for my first visit.
Learn:
1. The 20 most common phases and sentence patterns, e. G. Please, thank you, excuse me, I would like, where is, how much, today, tomorrow, yesterday.
2. The 20 most common verbs, e. G be, have, stop, go, come, give, buy, pay, eat, drink, wash, bathe, fuck, suck.
3. The 20 most common adjectives, e. G. Good, bad, pretty, ugly, big, small, hot, cold, wet, dry, fast, slow.
4. The 12 most common prepositions, e. G. Up, down, to, from, on, at, for, here, there.
5. The colors, e. G white, black, brown, red, blue, white, green, blue, silver, yellow, gold, pink.
6. The numbers.
7. Learn a few stock all purpose conversational phrases. This will make you seem smarter than you really are: "Que bueno" (how nice), "En tus suenos" (in your dreams), "Que lastime" (what a shame), "se puede + verb" (May I, is it possible).,"Caramba" (wow), "con(y)o" (darn it.)
When you think about it, you probably already know or half know a lot of these, even if you don't speak Spanish.
FORGET ABOUT THE NOUNS! They will come naturally as you need them and you can always say "come se llama eso en espagnol" (What is this called in Spanish?) or you can mime any object like a pen or a knife or a razor. You do not need to waste your time learning that "tomate" is tomato or that "cerveza" is beer, or that "taxi" is taxi, or "salida" is exit or "mesa" is table.
Follow the above program and you will make out absolutely fine at Blackbeard's, I promise you, and you will be able to have plenty of chatter with the chicas.
This plan won't make you fluent in Spanish, but it will give you enough words that you can work around any situation in terms of making your basic needs known, inviting a chica to go to the casino with you, dealing with public transport or restaurants, etc.
Finally remember that "embarasada" means pregnant, not embarrassed, and you will be fine.

Learning spanish
Thanks to all that responded to my question about "chica approved Spanish". I will take your recommendations to heart, but if anyone else has something to contribute, please do.

Back to Santo Domingo
Will be heading back to SDQ in June, wanted to hit Boca Chica, but found that the company that makes the kevlar vests are on backorder, prices are great used promotional code (ISG) for a 15% discount. Will be looking for a guide, that knows all the casa's (Baby Dolls, Foxy's, Casa Azul, GBP, Club MC, Pink Pony,) also I will be hanging out on the malecon, el conde. I will be staying at Hotel Palacio, if anyone else is in town hit me up first bottle of warm Baileys is on me jejjejjejejjejeje

To keep this thread on point, just about every DR chica likes Baileys. Many hotels in DR will provide ice for a guest. Tienes hielo? (hielo sounds like yellow) =Do you have ice?
What the fuck? We get a mongering discount on bullet proof vests? And I thought I mongered in some shady places...
Yes my friend we do get a (ISG) member discount, but only if you frequent Boca Chica, Because according to someone only gang fights and gang wars happen in Boca Chica no were else in the Dominican Republic do they have guns or gang fights so you will only need a Kevlar vest in Boca Chica. So when ordering a Kevlar vest tell the sales person you are headed to the bad part of Dominican Republic and they will know you are going to BC that plus you are in (ISG) member that's when the 15% comes into effect!

This Boca Chica gang fight is not in the touristic area and even outside the touristic area it is not a 24/7 thing. There are more dangerous places in the country than BC. In fact, for what I read everyday in multiple internet DR news pages, Sosua looks to me as a more dangerous place than BC. Instead of buying a bullet proof vest you should be buying a "Help improve the economy, buy me a beer" shirt.

I never felt unsafe in Sosua.

Island Transportation
First time trip to DR. Booked a flight on Delta headed to SDQ the challenge that I have is I will be staying at BB's WELL north of Santo Domingo. Does anyone have suggestion on transportation to get to Costambar? I know Caribe Tours is an option, but understand its like a 6 hour drive with the multiple stops?
Was wondering what other options are available if any.
Thanks in advance,
Larry
