Aeropostale t-shirts seem to be popular amongst some Dominican chicas. Prices for Aeropostale t shirts in DR, I have been told are $20US and up. Aeropostale webpage has a sale, with up to 75% off, t-shirts for women starting around $6US. Could be a good gift to give a chica, plus t-shirts don't take up much space in luggage and don't weigh much. http://www.aeropostale.com

Boca Chica Lacoste polos are fake, I suppose the 250 to 400 pesos Aeropostale shirts are fake too, thats why girls value foreign gifts, they believe they are always receiving original merchandise.

Big chain stores like La Sirena I would guess sell authentic stuff. I am not sure if they charge a tax on clothing purchases in DR.

Helpmann
Thanks, nice prices on that site. Always good to have some "carrots", LOL.
I'm sure this has been asked before. Do I bring my cell phone with me and buy a chip or rent / buy a cheap phone in DR? Can I do either at the airport or where?
I'm sure this has been asked before. Do I bring my cell phone with me and buy a chip or rent / buy a cheap phone in DR? Can I do either at the airport or where?
From what I understand, most GSM cell phones use sim cards (chips) , ATT here in the states uses GSM. Verizon cell phones use CDMA and oftentimes Verizon cell phones do not use sim cards. From what people in DR have told me, it is best to use GSM cell phones in DR, that use sim cards.
Some US cell phone carriers block their cell phones from being used on other networks. I have had ATT and verizon cell phones unlocked in the DR to use with Claro.
Claro and Orange are the two big cell phone companies in the DR. Claro sells cheapy cell phones with minutes included for around 500 pesos, sometimes less. One time I bought a ZTE brand cell phone from Claro with minutes for about 480 pesos. That cell phone was terrible, small dark screen and was not user friendly.
I bought a Nokia unlocked cell phone in the States, that I can use with an ATT sim card here in the states and when I go to DR I put in a Claro sim card and the phone also works in DR.
Amazon and Newegg sell unlocked cell phones. The Nokia I bought, has a keyboard, so sending text messages to chicas in DR is easy.
If you just want a basic cell to chat with chicas in DR, then a cheapy 500 peso cell phone from Claro would suffice. If you want a more user friendly cell phone, then maybe buy an unlocked cell here in the States and when you are in DR, you can visit Claro or Orange and buy a sim card with minutes included for under 500 pesos ($13US).
Claro has a store on the second floor of the airport in Santo Domingo, I bought a sim card there.
If you have an older cell phone laying around collecting dust, you could bring that cell phone to DR and try and have it unlocked in DR. Some cell phones, guys in DR have trouble unlocking. Unlocking a cell phone in DR costs $10US and up and could take an hour to accomplish.
From Dealnews: "Orbitz takes up 30% off select hotel stays during its 10th Anniversary Sale. Plus, qualifying 2-night stays receive a $25 Restaurant. Com Credit and a $200 Orbitz Credit for free. (Eligible hotel listings will feature an anniversary sale icon.) That's the best percent-off discount we've seen for hotels from Orbitz since February, and it's the first sale to also include freebie credits this year. Both credits will be emailed within three to five days of purchase. The $200 voucher will be good for a future roundtrip flight and hotel booking of five or more nights, and must be used by September 30. Deal ends June 15."

I checked for several hotels in Santo Domingo and the sale (promotion) applies to some Santo Domingo Hotels, probably other hotels in DR will also be included. $200 off a future flight + hotel booking of 5 nights or more, is not bad.
Has anyone used a singles website before going down to the DR to line up woman? Isn't there a cupid something? Is there any success stories out there or any problem stories.

I have read through a lot of the DR threads but am still a little unclear as this is all rather new to me. Can I have a perfectly successful mongering experience with only US dollars in the DR (specifically in Punta Cana)? Or am I better off with pesos? Or a mix? If someone could also please explain why that would be great.
Thanks!
