Passport check, Mong Kok, Hong Kong
It was back in about 2005, I was in a small room upstairs in massage place in Mong Kok, HK with a girl when the door was suddenly busted open. 2 mean plainclothed HK police busted in, staring at me and the girl. Luckily the girl had just arrived and we still had our clothes on.
He checked the girl's paper, which was OK, then he asked me for my passport. I carried a copy in my pocket just for this purpose. I gave him the copy but he would not look at it. I kept insisting which got him pretty mad. He was turning red in the face and started yelling at me to produce the original or he would cuff and take me to the station until I produce the original. Luckily I had the original passport in my back pocket, so I produced it. He let me go after warning me sternly about coming to HK to procure prostitutes.
Apparently the cops were after illegal immigrants, primarily mainland Chinese girls, who live illegally and turn tricks in HK.
I quickly walked down the stairs to get out. The stupid asshole triad gang who was guarding the door was just sitting there, smiling his stupid mea culpa smile. He was supposed alert the guys and girls fucking in those cubicles that LE is coming in, by flipping a switch to turn on all lights in the rooms. But apparently the police was familiar with this trick and prevented him from flipping the switch. If I were caught with my dick inside that girl, my naked ass would have been hauled to jail, waiting for days or weeks to see a HK magistrate for arraignment. Needless to say, I was pissed off at these stupid assholes.
After that incident I just forget about HK and went on to mainland China to meet the sweet, relaxed, beautiful mainland girls.
So carry a passport copy but also hide the original in a secured pocket, just in case you really need it.
Right, carrying your passport everywhere seems a bit paranoid and also carries a risk in itself (would you like to lose it along with your wallet to a pickpocket?). A simple photocopy in the wallet and the original looked up safely works for me. In the unlikely event that somebody with authority will demand to see my passport (come on, how often does this happen) I will show the copy and offer to retrieve the original for their perusal, should they require that.
