Obviously if I were going somewhere new, like Bogota, I would cover all bases. Make sure I had enough cash, until I found a convenient and safe ATM that worked on demand. Maybe all cash all the time would be the best option there.

When I mentioned this before, you said you were sexually experienced and had made a decision to devote yourself to your career rather than pursuing relationships, or something like that, I don't remember the exact wording.

A lot of guys are up on the latest way of doing things, but I retain a healthy skepticism of technology. Its a great thing, - until it doesn't work. I also prefer cash in the DR, though it might change in other locations.

I only carry back up credit cards for an emergency, - air fare, rental car, etc.

Every "critical" item (money, passport, cards, cell, etc) is on my person. In a questionable place, I carry a throw-away wallet with just a little money in the back pocket.

Laptop in a pack carried over my shoulder. Luggage only has clothing, incidentals, nothing critical.

The concern with cash is robbery, and I spend minimal time outside with cash. Directly to hotel, where it goes in safe with my passport, cards, cell, etc.

I only carry in my pockets what I am prepared to lose, and in alternate locations. Velcro closures are good against pickpockets. And again, a throw away wallet with lots of small bills, a small total.

And it may be antiquated, but if its a real concern, traveler's checks are maybe old-fashioned, but carrying a few as back up to change in a bank is an option.

Separate tip: Potable water. As a backup option, (brushing teeth, etc.) consider a tiny bottle with an ounce or so of old-fashioned chlorine bleach. Add a few drops, swish it around and wait a few minutes. A few drops will treat a liter of water, for brushing, or drinking when bottled water is not handy.

Get a card eaten by a machine on Friday evening, get your data stolen by a planted card reader, won't accept the card, etc. You name it.
