Years ago I read travel books but in modern day use the internet more. Of the books I read, Lonely Planet Guide to Thailand was one of the least impressive to me even though thick. Perhaps has been rewritten in recent years. It seemed to focus on mundane things like Hotels to stay, restaurants to eat, etc. Only useful stuff was usually where to go to get from one place to another, e. G. Bus, trains, etc. The most important travel info for me is details of all the attractions that places have to offer, whether related to nature, culture, history, arts, or to sexual escapades. Some travel books are very weak in telling you what there is to do, and what is really worth seeing.

E. G. I think the Kanchanaburi War museum, cemetery, and "death" railway is rather boring stuff. Little is divulged about the great sites of nature in the area to the average traveller.

How many people have been to the magnificent "Gaew Komol" Crystal Calcite cave in Mae Hong Son province? Most stunning cave in Thailand. Not your typical limestone stuff. I bet not many travel guides mention it.

What bays in Koh Tao Island have the best coral for snorkelling and sheltered from the typical winds? What is the right time of year to go? Hard to get info. I think I make my point.

If your travel guide is a local expert who knows the area, then you are better off, providing he is not just taking you to the same old standard tourist tours, but interested in what style of things you want to do.

When I go to some new part of Thailand, I like to find a really knowledgeable driver / boatman and guide and also to research myself on the internet. Consult the local Thais. They often know more than the foreign travels writers.

You can't know where you want to stay until you know where the attractions are located.

I really must be a freak. However arriving at Baccara bar at 1:30AM I watched two sets of girls downstairs and only managed to find one pretty face that I really liked. Red hair No. 175. Some observations. Thats what I do. LOL.

Very believable. No offense to anyone but one guy starts out bad but always wins the girl over is just not realistic. These girl are out for money- they could care less if you pleasure them or not.
