Smart offers their SmartBro "wireless" service. It connects a modem between your computer and the satellite dish. To me, this is not truly wireless. But, hopefully it helps.

Smartbro requires a 12-month contract. Probably some paperwork involved to prove that is your permanent residence. Monthy fee is 999 pesos for basic service that's a few times faster than dialup. Good enough to take care of email, simple browsing and Yahoo Messenger. You might talk your friend into signing up; he can use it after you leave.

smart bro is pay as you go. 10 peso per half hour. i used it all over the philippines for 3 months. speed will vary, but anywhere a smart cell phone will work, the bro should work.

we're both right. i was referring to the smartbro residential product while you are referring to the smartbro prepaid product. thanks for letting us know about the prepaid product, that is a new one. this kind of wireless access via 3g/hsdpa used to be available only with a long-term contract so it's great to hear of this alternative for the short-term visitors.
my gf's sister has the 999p smart bro residential and the speed is mediocre. they have a 2999p version but the technician said their house (not far from a provincial capital in northern luzon) is far enough from switching station that they will not get really hi speeds even with the upgrade. it also varies by time of day (better early morning pi time).
the smartbro wireless modem costs about $75 plus 10p for every 30 minutes as indicated. but i am curious about the transfer rate as main use will be webcam chatting which requires hispeed connection. has anybody used the wireless one for webcam chatting? certainly more convenient as you can use it anywhere instead of just at home. i don't mind the 10p /30 minutes as it might moderate the amount of time she expects me to chat with her. but i hate choppy video stream so speed is the critical consideration.
also, my gf's sister says msn messenger works better than wm. can anybody opine on that? salamat

i bought the smart bro wireless modem in sept in cebu for 3800 p and was very disappointed in the service. it worked fine at e mall where i bought it but at the hotel in lahug it would either not connect or connect but then the connection would drop after 10 to 20 min online. took it back to smart and they would not give me a refund. i tried it in davao cagayan de oro , butuan and dipolog and the only reliable connection was in davao. globe has the same type of service for only 2950 so i may try that when i go back for 6 weeks in feb
I had to reschedule my late Oct. / early Nov. Trip because my Dad passed away. I'm scheduling a late Feb. / early March trip but am going to shorten it to 10 days. 4 nights in Cebu with a few nights in Manila on each end. It's my first trip to the Phils.
I am going to fly in a girl from Tacloban, but now since my trip is shorter, I'm not sure how to do this.
I arrive to Cebu from Manila at 4:30 p. M. Feb. 23rd. I'm thinking I"ll get settled that night. Maybe get a short time. And then my girl flies in early the next morning. Very early. So I guess I'll go to the airport and pick her up.
So, I'm thinking I'll have her stay a night in Cebu with me, then we'll spend a day and night in Bohol, then the final night in Cebu. The problem is that after the final night, the only flight out for here is very early. Say 6 a. M. As I recall.
My dilemma is that I am also scheduled to fly back to Manila on PAL (she flies PAL also) that day at 3:15.
Do I have time to drop her off at the airport via taxi and get back to my hotel in Cebu (I'm thinking of the Richmond Plaza). And hang out for a while before making my way back to the airport. Or is there a better way to "do " this. I'm thinking maybe I can get one more short time in after she's gone, but am I pushing it? Is it far from the Richmond to the airport? Heck, I guess with a 6 a. M. Flight, she'd need to be there at 4. So we'd need to leave at 3? Maybe I just stay up?
Any suggestions?

You could just book a flight on Cebu Pacific Air to Manila they have one leaving at 6:40 and at 7:10 for around 288 Pesos. It will cost you more than that in Taxi fare going back and forth again.
You could also kick her out of bed and send her to the airport on her own, then get the concierge to send up his pretty cousin or neighbor for a few hours.

It was just pointed out to that the fares do not include the additions and they make the fares 3 or 4 times higher.
So stick with my original idea, kick her out and get another.

Seriously, I flew round trip from MNL to CEB a few weeks back on CP and the fare was around 3200 php. :cool:

If your not going to enjoy the nightlife of Cebu or stay in one of the resorts on Mactan, why even go?
Instead have your girl meet you in Manila and both of you fly to Bohol. Will save you time.
Since this is your first trip to P.I., you need to check out AC for a day or two on the front end!

I paid similar, only get cheaper if you the red eye flights, fly during normal hours and much more IMHO. Can fool the uninitiated and looks so cheap...but tax is so high :)
cansx: they dropped the price to 2800 (includes 300 load), but you are correct about the speed being terrible (unless close to a smart tower). cannot get it to broadcast her webcam at all which was the main reason for buying it. also tried to upgrade the smartbro dsl from the 999 to the top end 2999 but the tech said because of house location will not be much faster.
anybody tried the globe wireless modem? resukts?
