cansx: they dropped the price to 2800 (includes 300 load), but you are correct about the speed being terrible (unless close to a smart tower). cannot get it to broadcast her webcam at all which was the main reason for buying it. also tried to upgrade the smartbro dsl from the 999 to the top end 2999 but the tech said because of house location will not be much faster.

anybody tried the globe wireless modem? results?
my experience with the smartbro residential wireless modem service is that location relative to an antenna access point is everything. if you're close enough, the webcam will work fine with the 999p service. the tech let you know as much. globe is the same situation, but they will likely have different locations for their antenna access points so you could try them.

i have the post-paid version, called pldt weroam. the speed varies from snail-like to reasonably fast depending on time of day, weather, distance from a cell site, and whether it feels like working. prior to this i had the same type of thing from globe. it's performance was similar. i use these things when on travel and no other means of connection are available. to use them as your only means of connecting to the net would be, i think, extremely frustrating. sometimes the thing just stops working for no apparent reason and then i have to reset it.
Cebu thread is about Cebu.....
Also I found a great restaurant near Cebu midtown called Casa Verde, it means green house.

That doesn't ring a bell. Is it a new place? Can you give rough directions?

One of my favorites is Lemon Grass in the Ayala Mall.

Have they opened the new section of Ayala mall yet?

Cansx,

I agree that the Casa Verde is good. The ribs are excellent, and it's hard to find barbecue ribs in the Philippines. I think it's a good place to take a date (not a first date), because it's upscale, centrally located, but neither outrageously expensive nor too fancy.

Casa Verde can be hard to find, though. It's off of Osmena, just before you reach Robinson's and the Fuente. It's a side street with a MacDonald's on one side and Jollibee on the other.

Take this side street headed toward F. Ramos. Just before you reach F. Ramos (the street near the Kan-Irag Hotel), there is a turnoff to the right.

X
Yes very beautiful, but not all are open yet.

Going on your instructions , the side street your talking about has to be Arlington Ponds.

There is only one street off the right of Arlington Ponds , before F. Ramos , and it's V Ranudo Extension.

Before V R Extension , and on the same right hand side of Arlington Ponds , there is a small korean restaurant.

Never knew there was a nice Restaurant down that alleyway , VR Ext , might try it one day.

Xman,

GE was kind enough to reply to my post asking about internet access and your reply to him was totally out of line. You trying to make even more enemies here than you already have? Your NUMEROUS flame wars and off topic posts clutter the board MUCH more than GE's helpful replies.

Going back a ways, I was in a Cebu mall, I think Ayala Mall, with a Cebu veteran. He pointed out a place for a coffee or soda where the old guys would sit around and check the ladies. Occasionally an interested girl would pop in and off they would go. Was not real obvious but seemed well known. Anyone know where the place is or any similar places.

I see alot of guys sitting around Robinsons Mall coffee places as well, maybe same.

hg,

i've met ge and consider him a friend. i seriously doubt that he was even slightly offended by my "cebu" message. i quoted him, but it was the entire thread that seemed out of place. i thought it would be better in "living in philippines" or "faq".

ge lives in davao, btw -- not cebu. and i thought your question was about luzon?

"off topic clutter"? that seems a bit harsh!

anyway, i'm glad to hear ge's reply was useful to you and others.

hg posting in the cebu thread: they have a 2999p version but the technician said their house (not far from a provincial capital in northern luzon) is far enough from switching station that they will not get really hi speeds even with the upgrade.

X: Northern Luzon was an EXAMPLE but I wanted to know how the modem worked in the various areas I frequent. Even those of us who do not live in the PI use internet connections, so living in PI would not seem like the right folder as it affects visitors and locals alike.

Back to mongering in Cebu. I keep hearing anecdotes that Silver Dollar's business ethics are getting worse and runners more frequent.

I know at SM mall in Cebu there is a place called The French Baker that is WELL known as a place that foregners go and sit and filipinas come walking by and give a smile if they are intererested.
i know at sm mall in cebu there is a place called the french baker that is well known as a place that foregners go and sit and filipinas come walking by and give a smile if they are intererested.
yes khun larry was talking about ayala and robinsons , so i replied accordingly.

french baker at sm has been talked about for many years now. in fact sm was the first one , ayala was built after sm. its rather amusing to go f. baker and see who is sitting there ogling the passing girls.

a slightly better chance at sm cause more working class girls and unemployed types there , but problem is too many are giggling little **** girls , walking past , smiling at joe , not thinking of being picked up by a guy twenty thirty or more years older than themselves. girls smiling at foreigners is not all that unusual in cebu city. they are friendly , but does not necessarily mean they want to be picked up. you will not find many , if any girls , sitting inside f. baker itself eating or drinking. its not their kind of filipino place. anyway more maturer approachable girls at ayala. my experience anyway.

have a look at the guys at french baker sm , for me rather amusing.

by the way , i have had that place under surveillance for many years and have never seen any guy call a girl across and chat to her , or pick up a girl ex french baker. not saying it does not happen , but difficult to stop the passing girls in their tracks and get them to come across to your table , difficult. some distance between you and the girls. and usually the front row table seats are taken. only one , sometimes two front row tables by the way , and if sitting at a table behind any of those , you have got no chance. add to that , no alcohol served at f baker , boring. dont worry , i have checked it out , on and off over the years , lol.

as i said before , if you walk around these malls , you have a slightly better chance. for starters you can walk within an inch of the girl and say hello etc. sitting down , expecting girls to come to your table rarely works , unless your gods gift to women. i got a very good regular girl this way once , but only once. she sat at the table next to me. rest is history.

overall , malls are only a chance , no certainty , thats for sure , other than hard core hookers who daily patrol such places , and cheeky enough to approach you at your table. even then not many of those anyway. nowadays , management's policy requires security staff to keep hookers out of the malls , best they can.
