I am arriving in ten days time.
It would be most helpful if those resident in Bangkok or visiting could up-date this thread with actual openings and closures of night clubs and MPs.
Is the Beer Garden open? Presumably FLs cannot last long without going out!

I was out of Thailand for about 18 months and returned a couple of weeks ago. I've noticed many changes in places I used to go. I mention some of them and I also ask for your help with a couple of cases. In the king and I massage there used to be one girl that would happily provide HJ and more to regulars and I was a regular. I visited just two days ago, asked for her number but I got another girl. I asked her also by name and they told she is not working there. The replacement show no interest on providing anything but the massage. Any ideas which numbers can provide something more there? PM of course and I can be more specific on numbers.
NEP: Billboard; this used to be one my favorite bars because there were beautifull girls, nice shows and a very helpfull mamassan. All of these have gone! Another observation is that drink prices have gone up! I remember drinks (whiskey) at 120 and now the norm is 150! That's 25% more! Farang inflation? Haha! It seems also that the 2K for short time is the norm. I remember that I had no problem of getting 1. 5 for short time which has some times returned to overnight because I usually use 5 star hotels and the girls loved them.
Soi Cowboy. What a complete change! I think it is more a tourist attraction now. Too many women customers! Not acceptable! How we can take it back? Haha! Did the "Arab" overtake everything there?
I found the addict massage withc I think is relativelly new. I can recommend it. Not all girls but I had a great time with Koi and Oil. A not good one with Pat.
I visited also the Versailles in Rama 4. Few girls but quality of service is good and in cases very good. I had a great time with Fon there. A compination of GFE and PSE, more to the GFE since she talks too much! But one of the best blows and 69s ever!

They all speak about it in very hushed, discreet tones, but the question is still out there. They just tend to ignore it unless pressed.
I have no idea the length of mourning but I'm sure a month isn't out of the question. Maybe longer.
The big question, I think, is the succession. I'm told that the crown prince isn't all that popular with the people. I'm also told that the princess is far more popular but can't be queen because she's not the oldest child. There is a contingent that believes Rama IX will be the last king ever and that Thailand will do away with the monarchy as we know it.

I can post here a link to a BBC interview with a former Thai PM (and a great friend of HMK) that openly discusses succession including the little love Thai have for the heir apparent. However, nobody consider the King immortal, and if you want to learn all kinds of rumors that circulate, just open your ears.
By the way, this board is not hosted in Thailand and anonymous participants are not subject to any censorship or have to be scare about draconian lese majesty law. These kneejerk reactions to are better suited for some other forum of aging stiffanus expats.

Interesting times.[/QUOTE]Yes, for 99% of the Thais, Bhumibol Adulyadej (Wikipedia content blocked in Thailand) is the last King of Thailand, and having a Queen instead, is not a readily acceptable substitute, beside requiring a fundamental change in succession law. It has to be noted, these laws are not being changed while the King is alive, because he and the Queen have not shown the will to do so.
But, things are not so simple and even less the Thai mentality is. My opinion is that Thailand does not want to be a republic ever, and if the Prince can show just enough dignity to ascend to the throne, he can hold it as a symbolic figure, or promplty resign in favor of one of his kids.
The real problem that the successors have is that the King has just too much talent and magnetism to be be compared at.

Somebody said there was not supposed to be any live music on display during the mourning period, but last night Bangkok Beat had two live bands-plus the usual large group of freelance companions for rent. One thing I have noticed about Bangkok Beat is that most people in there seem to having fun. Lots of customers in GoGo's seem like they are on a humorless mission to get their ashes hauled, buy having little fun in the process.

An excellent time for tourists not to bother coming here, and for us who live here to take an extended holiday somewhere like the Philippines or Cambodia.

The rest will be solemnly respectful for a polite period of time. Then the struggle will begin. What unfolds my make the events of 2006 seem like a minor disturbance. It probably will be a good time to take an extended trip to Angeles City.
