One thing to add about weather: Medellin has much more variable altitude than Cali. If you're staying in Poblado or further up the mountain, than it will get quite nippy at night, more like Bogota weather. Bring a sweater or jacket. Now contrast that with early afternoon deep down in the valley: it will feel more like a hot summer day than "eternal spring." You will be sweating in your polo shirt.

So the real answer to the weather question is it depends where and when in Medellin.

Cali is hotter but it's not as bad as people say. You'll be fine as long as you wear light fabric chinos and short-sleeve shirts, and avoid walking during peak afternoon hours when it's hottest. The evenings bring in cooling breezes from the Pacific for nearly perfect going-out weather.

Day 1

After a long flight, I arrived at Camino Real 1A hotel around 11pm. I took quick shower and headed for Faraon. Only 3 girls and saw two doable at a very dark environment. I decided to bail and hit new place. Lo Maximo was my next stop. Only three girls on lineup. Chose girl named Bianca(19). She looked very young with cute face. I went back to my hotel and took shower and walked around along with big crowd of people participating in festival. I checked club excess but they tried to charge me 10k to enter. I told them that I want to check inside before I pay. I checked inside to see only fuglies. I left the place disappointed. Because of the festival, almost every joint for girls were closed.

I took a taxi and went around about 5 different locations to discover that they were all closed. I tried Club Praga for local action but Praga was closed as well. Taxi driver took me to Faraon and I went inside after the doorman told me that they got 10 girls working that night. To my amazement, I saw at least 3 girls smoking hot with banging body. Colombia is interesting this way in that you have these incidents where danger explodes in your face but nothing happens. I've heard of similar anecdotes from other people.

Not honestly sure what the "right" thing to do is, as I wasn't there. Assuming there is space to move, I think I would have just run away like a bat out of hell, maybe drop some bills if my brain can think past the adrenaline. With the crazies and the drug addicts, you just never know what they'll do, that's the real danger here. Would much rather be held up by an experienced criminal, as opposed to a druggie, crazy person, or even worse, a nervous teen with little to no experience robbing anyone and itching to prove he's a badass to his fellow delinquents.

Just as an fyi- even the folks that work at Sr. Amor will greatly discourage you from walking after closing when it's dark out in that area. I would discourage walking far distances in that area as well after dark. BTW- Faraon is just half a block from Dr. Amor if you go right after exiting Dr. Amor. ALSO, Ropa de Bebe "the fags place/casa" is to the left and around the corner half a block. That's probably as far as you want to walk in this area. ALso try to avoid walking alone at night. Take a taxi (being thay are cheap) whenever possible at night.

You said th bum was laying on the ground so I take it he was not in a position to chase you down which was fortunate for you. There is no right answer when just speculating what one WOULD have done but since you say he was laying on the ground, I would have stepped up the pace and dashed away without any verbal exchange. HOWEVER, face to face, he could have anything he wanted if it meant I had another day to monger by giving it to him.

I live in a large American city and just THIS Christmas Eve, a 79 year old man was shot in the chin and in the chest during a robbery while he was loading chicken into his car to take to a holiday feast he was hosting with his wife of 54 years. The murderer then held the lifeless man's body up and searched through his pockets for 90 minutes then dropped him and walked away. Luckily several people tailed him as they called police on their cell phones and he was arrested. Turns out he was a convicted previously of murder in 1985 and had been paroled last year. When the police arrested him he told him he had just shot the old man down the street. He will be eligible for the death penalty because of his previous conviction. My sympathy's go out to his wife and family.

As a side note:

I wrote some time ago how Robert from the Mansion in Medellin told me how the VERY FIRST Paisa I had been with (from Loutron) had been shot to death at a night club in Medellin. It was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Well on my last visit to Cali, Juan Carlos (from Castle Cali) informed me that one of the girls from my first photo shoot there had been shot in the kneecap. Again it was a case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. I posted her picture before so I didn't see any reason not to post it again below. (BTW, her picture being posted had nothing to do with her being shot Juan assured me). I thought the picture ironic (look and see why).

I recall it was about 5pm when I met this bum. It wasn't dark. I think Dr. Amor closed around 6pm that day. I usually take taxi around places unless there is big crowd of people. There was a big festival related to Christmas.

I grew up shooting with our Dad & my brothers. I own handguns, rifles & shotguns and am still a shooting enthusiast.

If this is all true, my take is that since it was a bum on the ground and he pulled a gun without following through the gun was nonfunctional. He was trying to scare you shitless into giving up some money or valuables.

Regards[/QUOTE]I always stay at the Apartahotel del Rio and it is chica friendly. It is on Ave 2 close to Faroan and Dr Amor. The Intercontinental is nice, but it is more than twice the price. If you want a nice hotel like the Intercontinental, I suggest the Sheraton Four Points. The location is much closer to the action and the staff seemed friendlier to me.
