I've read the "Thrill is gone" posts going back awhile. Rio may well be cheaper than SP but a couple locals and even an expat today have told me Rio is shit these days and genuinely not safe. As you can see, they are different. Also every guy has a different mongering style, and it's hard to know what you will like. I tend to stick to SP now. Other guys really prefer Rio and wonder why we go to SP, overpay and go to Scandallo.

Bad things happen in every major city in the world.

I was doing at least 20,000 steps a day around Copacabana and Centro and never got any bother. Day time in Copacabana is fine and night time get an Uber. If you're scared of your own shadow stay at home.

I wore zipped shorts with a hidden pocket for my card, only carried enough money for that particular day, I don't wear jewelry, kept my regular phone in the hotel safe and I don't drink alcohol but if you do just don't get wasted. Just common sense really.
