Thanks Hank Free. The Shangri La would be my choice if I stayed on the river. If you are shacking up with a girl, plan on eating and hanging at the hotel, and want privacy, the Peninsula / Marriot side of the river would work.
Vittu, there are a dozen beautiful high end hotels, including The Peninsula and a Marriott, on the river. My advice would be to select one on the BTS Skytrain side of the river. It takes a long time to get anywhere in Bangkok and being on the "convenient" side of the river is better. The Peninsula and others do have free river shuttles that take you to their side of the river.
The BTS station Stephian Taksin (spelling?) ends right at the river pier and staying at hotel near the stop would make the river location far more convenient. I know there is a Mandarin Oriental on the "convenient" side of the river but I forget if that is the one next to the BTS stop. Maybe somebody else can remember which hotel is nearest that BTS station.
If I stayed on the river, I would prefer that hotel.
If you stay near the river I would suggest renting a long tail boat for a 1-1 1/2 hour tour that would take in the weekend market. I forget the name of the market but it begins with the letter "T". It's not the huge Chatuchuk market. On the weekend a boat will rent for about B1200.
In which of the riverside hotels have you stayed?
Allover / Vittu,
The nearest hotel to the BTS Skytrain is the Shangri La, then the Oriental (Mandarin) and then the Royal Orchid Sheraton (next to River City). All three are 5 star class.
Cheers, Hank.
5 star is definitely pushing it with the Royal Orchid Sheraton. The rooms are nice and the pools are nice, but the general level of service, and all the tour groups coming in and out make the place a 4-star, IMHO, not a 5.
I have never been to the Admiral Premier, but have stayed 4 nights in Phachara Suites this June in an Executive Suite.
A most informative review. Thanks ever so much for taking the time to post.

If you stay there with your wife it would be ok.
I had no problems bringing a couple of ladies back (1 at a time, taken from Star of Light) to the ROS. The fact is, there's pretty much nothing stopping you from taking your companion with you to the guest elevators. It's not a true 5-star, but it also doesn't cost like a 5-star, particularly if you use SPG points to book it.
Hey Guys, I tired to do a search but came with blank. Has anyone stayed at the Column Bangkok? If so, is it girl friendly?

Although I've stayed there on numerous occasions over the past 20 years and have always enjoyed good service. They also have an excellent Lounge facility with an extensive happy hour, for SPG members.

Perhaps, but it's simply NOT. The ROS doesn't have the sort of amenities, nor the sort of concierge service, nor the general attitude toward individualized service of their clientele, to be a true 5* place. And in actual fact, Starwood has 5 other hotels in Bangkok alone (St. Regis, Sheraton Grande, Plaza Athenee, Le Meridien, and Westin Grande) that they internally rank higher and pretty consistently charge more for.
In real life, the St. Regis and Sheraton Grande are true 5 stars, the Plaza Athenee, Le Meridien, and Westin Grande are more like 4 and a half stars, and the ROS is a 4 star place. Industry guides with self-servingly inflated ratings notwithstanding. That being said, I've gotten good deals there with my SPG points, and If I wanted to be by the river, I would have no problem booking the ROS - although recently, the Lebua is offering much better deals if cash money is being used to pay for it.

Nice large room and there is a Foodland right next to the hotel which is excellent for cheap food 24
Hrs. Soi Cowboy is less then 10 minutes walk and is quiet at night as the location is off the main Sukhumvit Road.

Axpire
Hi There,
Grand Sukhumvit Hotel is definitely Guest Friendly and does not charge any additional fee. I have stayed there on a number of occassions and have had no problems bringing more than one guest at a time and at late hours after Nana Liquid closed down.
Have a great time.
