Anyone have any experience with the blackberry storm 2 in DR?
As usual you want to throw your money around in a display of conspicuous consumption, Pooter. It is easy to walk from BB to the highway, save 50 pesos, and avoid the risk of burning your leg on the exhaust of a moto.
Frannie is correct, you can walk to the road. I suggest spending the 50 pesos, a little over US$1, and relax. The road is very dusty, and the local makes the US$1 in an honest exchange.

The store charged like 600 pesos with a charger, so I think it was 500 pesos to do unlock. That store is a Claro store just north of the parque de independecia near an isla gas station.
Ill be in the dr from nov. 6-20th. I plan to start in sd and bocha, then to pp and sosua! My question is, is there any open air food markets or streets vendors in any of these cities? I want to know if they have areas where its just food, some place where bizarre foods or no rservations would film a show? I want to try the local cusine since thats part of being on vacation. Any food street vendors for a late night snack. I want to try all the cheap delicious food the dr has to offer. So if there is or any recommendations on where I should eat for the local flavor please let me know.
I agree. Moto (50 pesos) , J-C (35 pesos) , PtoPta-Sosúa (45 pesos) : total 130 pesos Taxi from Costambar to Sosúa at least 1200 pesos, maybe they would ask 1500.
Ride the J-C to the hospital. Next to the hospital is the parada (terminus) for the Sosúa publicos so you can sit in the first one until it leaves (rarely more than 10 minutes wait).
Sounds about right. As ever, you can halve the fare by negotiating sole use of a publico (use it as your private taxi). They would take you to Costambar for 600 pesos. Not sure if they are allowed inside the gated area, though, so you may or may not need to take a moto from the gate to Blackbeards.
Alternatively you could reverse the procedure that Professor 1 suggested and do it all for 130 pesos.
Note that the leg using the J-C publico won't work after about 8. 00pm as they stop running around then.

Frannie is correct, you can walk to the road. The Costambar taxi mafia will fuck you harder than any girl at BB's will. Take a moto out of Costambar and grab a publico or a taxi from the main road otherwise you will pay through the ass.

John of NJ, I suggest that you take a moto from BB to the gate, then take the J-C publico to the center. A publico to Sosua will arrive shortly thereafter. You will save money, and only lose 30 minutes or so in travel time.
Thanks guys for responding and providing such useful info. Only used a public once and I had a chica as a tour guide. But I mastered motos. This will be a very interesting trip.

The last night there I was so drunk (my friends were paying the waitress to give me what I thought were free shots) when I picked up my chica I was so afraid I was going to crash I paid another motoconcho to take her to my hotel, while I rode my moto. All the locals cheered when I got it started because I could barely walk.
Very funny. Very stupid as well. I have not ridden a moto since.

Be careful, and stick to the well-established eating places. I violated one of the cardinal street vendor rules for the second time in 13 years, while grabbing breakfast on my way to the bus terminal to Boca Chica, and got a bad ham and cheese croissant. The sandwich keep me near a bathroom for 2 days.

Restaurants that hopefully don't cut corners on sanitation, should be patronized.
Even if some street food doesn't give you Cholera, some might mess up a person's stomach requiring extended trips to the toilet.
In Villa Mella, Santo Domingo, there are recommended street fried food places. The very small food place next door to mystik (next to the colmado) has gotten good reviews, the mystik restaurant has gotten good reviews from Alex Deuce. D' Luis Parrilada on the malecon is usually OK. In Santiago there are numerous empanada food carts on the sidewalks. Some large supermarkets in DR have hot food for sale, some get good reviews. Provecon (sp?) in Puerto Plata near the University, I read, may be good.
At playa rincon in samana, beach shack BBQ pit type restaurant (no running water) , they gutted a grouper fish (Mero in Spanish) in front of me and cooked it on the pit. Best piece of fish I ever tasted. Mr Gogo got good beach food, I believe at Rio San Juan.
On the roads and highways you will see various things for sale to eat (spiny lobsters when heading to the santo domingo airport, freshwater fish when driving to Santiago). If you meet people who have family or friends who live on a finca (farm) in the campo (countryside) , free range chicken from a family farm in the campo is supposedly very good (they kill the chicken in front of you and pluck the feathers and cook the chicken outside with wood). Fincas usually have lots of different tropical fruits, that you can pick yourself. Pineapple is usually very good in DR, there are other tropical fruits you can try either whole or as a fresh juice (papaya, passion fruit, oranges etc).
Sancocho is a soup that can take hours to make. At Christmas time they make a sweet bean dish.

Cost was 2 days at an Hotel near the airport. If you decide to try it anyway, at least get your Hepatis shots (A & C if I remember well) before taking your trip. Will cost you around $125. 00 but could save you a lot of money down the road. Just check the yellow pages for Travel Vaccine.

Especially Boca Chica at the weekends, but everywhere. Often fast food merchants just set up wherever there is a vacant lot and a streetlight. Also some colmados have plates of food available. I have eaten all kinds of stuff and never got sick. Everything from chimichanga to chicken to roast pork sandwiches to fish to empanadas to hamburguesas, dulce de coco and fruit salad. I have never gotten sick. Even street vendors know something about hygiene and usually wear those disposable plastic gloves.
The person who describes a violent illness in another post here may have eaten toxic shellfish. I would avoid shellfish.
Maybe I am just lucky.
I would be careful not to eat any food from the street vendors, especially food items that weren't cooked under high temps. That usually kills any germs provided the vendor is clean.
If you are vacationing for a week or less why take the chance of being sick for most of your trip? I got sick once after eating boiled corn, threw up and had to stay in for three days. I still had to visit my physician when I got back who prescribed either antibiotics or a muscle relaxer, don't remember.
If you must, stay with well cooked meat like BBQ or make sure that you aren't eating days old food.
Eating sandwiches (bad meat, cheeze, and lettuce), anything that could be a week old, or wasn't properly cooked, you're asking for trouble.

How well central air systems are cleaned and maintained, I don't know (hotels and airplanes).
Has any one seen this
It says it in Venezula but I figure its probably similer to the resorts in the Dr.
