I've been ripped off also. But learned.
Mine was in Lisbon. Here's what I do now:
Use the hotel safe, for passport, backup credit cards etc.
It's very important, put a note on the door for yourself to collect them on the way out. More than once I've caught myself at the last minute.
I just use my regular wallet, with my driver's lic, and cash and whatever card I want. Driver's licenses are good enough for I'd.
I also use pants / shorts with zippered pockets. I have some from llbean, and Duluth trading company. Duluth seems to be better.
I went to a nude beach in Italy, there I took only a photocopy of my dl and passport, and bus fare and beer money. No cards.
In Barcelona I was fingered twice in the same day. But my zippered pants easily saved the day.
Hope this helps.
I hope I am using the correct forum to post this. I have traveled so many places in the last forty years it's hard to remember. This forum has been extremely helpful to me for the last eight years. I have made several posts. All of my international travel has been for pleasure not business. I am not a high roller and since I retired I am doing my best to spend my kids inheritance. In my forty years of travel an attempt to rob me has been made about six times. Twice money was taken from me. Every time an attempt was made to rob me it was after dark and if you can believe this I was always within one to two blocks of my hotel. It has always been the same story. I am in a bar or restaurant a little tipsy and after a long day I decide to walk the short distance to my hotel. You know get a little fresh air before I retire. All my robbery attempts have been made like this. These incidences have been several years apart. I get a little complacent and wham. The last time was just a few months age in Buenos Aires and I was on a bust sidewalk. He didn't get much money maybe ten dollars. I bet there are other members that have had the same experience. Your walking down the sidewalk and out of nowhere someone comes up behind you and sticks his hands in your pocket and relieves you of your money. This isn't really a pickpocket. He doesn't care if you are aware of what he's doing, it happens so fast you don't have time to react. In this incident the weather was cool and I had most of my money in my inside jacket pocket..
One thing not to leave home without
Imodium AD.
It is hard to find the good stuff here in Quito.
I bought a box with me, but did not check to see it was empty.
What a dummy. Almost 5 days of shitting.
