Can't wait to see this place!
The bad news is, after your first Thailand trip, you'll be finding yourself trying to break away for minimum of 2 weeks at a time, with $1000+ airfare and 18-22 hour flights each way just to get back there, because Thailand will put those places to shame. I was in the process of investigating buying a new vacation/retirement home near Jaco when I went to Thailand for my first trip and that was the end of that process.
Wow ok, I'm looking foward for this trip, it's not until next May, but just trying to do my homework, and you guys are great with your post!
Baiyoke boutique hotel, bangkok
Can anyone tell me whether the Baiyoke Boutique Hotel in Bangkok is girl friendly?
Does one have to register the lady who is accompanying you for the night with reception?
Thanks,
Bungee Man
Davis Hotel Sukhumvit Soi 24 is girl friendly
Up to a point. Given that more than half the rooms are 1 and 2 bedroom suites and even 3 bedroom houses I doubt we mongers are their target market. However, I have just spent 2 weeks there and brought back a different lady most nights. One night she asked for I'd. On all other nights no questions asked. I wouldn't say my guests were exactly welcome but they were certainly tolerated. I noticed a few other guest at breakfasts but not many. When I first stayed last year the hotel was deserted and they were happy to have any guests. Recently, I've noticed they have been offering special rates on Expedia and they have been very busy with family groups.
I have stayed at the Davis main wing 3 times in the past year. I like it because I can get a very quiet, large (approx 80square meter) one bedroom suite for 3, 400 baht including breakfast and internet. I also like the location because it is in a residential area at the end of Soi 24 well away from Sukhumvit. Access to / from the airport via Rama 4 is also good. Plenty of people will disagree about the locatinn because you need to walk or take a taxi to get most places. I like walking and need the exercise. Phrom Phong station is about 15 minutes, Washington Square also about 15 minutes; Soi 33 about 20 minutes; Soi cowboy about 30 minutes and Nana about 45 minutes.
Good points:
Price / Value.
Room.
Location (see above)
Good internet (except for skype which they may be throttling)
2 pools, one roof top in the sun, one ground floor garden setting in the shade.
Gym.
Starbucks in the Davis hotel corner wing.
Décor and facilities. Perhaps getting a little dated but someone spent bucket loads of money setting up this hotel, just checkout the amount of marble in the bathrooms.
Bad points.
Location (see above)
Family groups.
Breakfast is ordinary and offerings don't change.
Skype doesn't work reliably on their internet, though everything else seems fast.
No restaurants / bars in the immediate area and hotel is expensive with limited choices. It looks like they are about to open a new section between the Main Wing and the Corner Wing and it looks like it will offer some upmarket dining and drinking options.
Conclusion: for me the room makes it worthwhile but I can see why many mongers would choose other accommodation.
