Hi everyone,
I just thought I would say hello as I am off to BKK for the first time in June and no doubt will have a good few questions in the next few months :).
On the subject of theft prevention, if you don't have a safe in the room then (and this is obviously if you are in your hotel room) take a clear plasstic zip-loc Jiffy bag. Put your valuables in it and take it into the shower with you. I also offer it to the girls when they go and shower too.

Technically the law in Thailand is that a foreigner should have their passport in their possession at all times. Realisitically most of us just carry a photocopy of it. But if stopped by the police, not having it could create some difficulties. In my many years of going to Thailand, I have never been in a situation where the police asked for my passport. Normally I lock it up in the room safe.
My recommendation is to always have a good color photocopy of it.

Ha ha--good one, had me thinking about it for about a minute.
But I think he meant when he is back in his room he locks up all the small items including the room key. But he did mention thats to prevent anyone from leaving once he locks the door?--though I've never had a hotel room where I can lock myself in from the inside?--just a thought.

I once crossed the border to Burma at Mae Sai for a day trip at Tachilek with just a copy and they even put a departure stamp on it. Burmese immigration didn't care shit as well.

I think this is another one of those regulations/laws that while on the books are never really enforced. I agree that most Thai police will be satisfied with the photocopy, but if you are in enough trouble already I am sure they would use this to pile on.
I think there were people who wrote about getting caught up in raids on bars and being detained a bit longer when without the passport. Didn't the Qbar used to have these sorts of problems?

I doubt that police can and will hold it against you if you only carry a copy of your passport. Those who got in trouble may have had violated some laws (maybe drug abuse) and police may have wanted to make sure that it is a true copy and not a faked one. Maybe they also wanted to place a stamp in the passport to mark it for further visits.
Or maybe those guys simply misbehaved and police used it as a pretense to "punish" them. I myself have witnessed countless numbers of bigmouthed idiots at embassies and other places who did a lot of harm to their concern by acting like lager louts instead of staying calm and factual.

I always have a paper copy of my passport on me + My Embassy Stamped Picture ID Card.
This is enough, really. I got arrested a few times by the Thai Police (just routine Checks, especially when I ride my motorbike), they never asked me about my passport, but I told them that if they wanted the Original, it was available for them to check at my home.
Worse come to worse, they will tell you that you must have your original passport with you and give you a fine (tell them you want to pay the fine now, and they will take cash from you, discreetely).

OOPS i was told that i had too only when i was in Bangkok.

This is a hilarious post...although definitely not worth of Jackson's recommendation.
Let me do the math - wasted 1:30 to 5:00 am in order to get laid for B500, ended up with a HJ from an ugly duckling. So instead of paying say 1000 or 1500 for ST, you saved B500 but wasted 4 hrs. Awesome - do I have some great business deals to propose to you!
