Why have we not all commented on it? Because it is an average piece of work and not really worth commenting on. There is lots of good stuff in it and it might be useful to anyone who knows shit about the island as a starting point, but they would need to take Gates' opinions and generalizations with a pinch of salt. And you know my comments are coming from someone who is very aware of Dominican endemic racism and who usually stands up for Haitians.
Just to take a simple example. The documentary opens with what Gates claims is a band playing traditional Dominican music. Only problem is that music is not Dominican it is Cuban (or possibly Puerto Rican?) and not at all widely played in the DR. He would only have to walked a few minutes to find bachata or merengue (or even Dominican-style reggaeton or Dominican-style salsa which would have been more apt). But he was in a hurry and on a cheap budget. (This is Thursday, so this must be the Dominican Republic). It doesn't really matter about music, but it does about issues where thousands of lives have been lost and thousands more are at risk today.
Watch it by all means, but keep you minds open and check every fact or statistic he gives independently.

I have this rule whenever I monger: no politics. Most people who know me well would say I am a political junkie, yet I choose to keep my personal life and political affiliations separate from my mongering activities. I have seen the Gates documentaries and like the others, I decided not to opine on the subject because I know that the discussion ultimately deterioates into a verbal pissing match.
Gates couldn't squeeze 500+ years of history into a one hour special, so naturally quite a bit was left out and with a limited budget he took some poetic license. One of the best books on the history of island of Hispaniola is C L R James' The Black Jacobins, and there are numerous links and writings on the tiano culture or what's left of them, yes the entire population was indeed decimated by Columbus and his men in their quest for gold. African slaves, millions of them, were brought in to replace the Indians (Arawaks). The notion that African genes arent prevalent in most Dominicans is absurd and patently false. Their denial of their obvious African ancestry coupled with the shame and anger of being occupied by Haiti for decades, was
