We need a separate thread about how fucked up our country is and especially towards those that have served in battle. How about multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan and then not upping the guys just before they get vested? Recently the ruled in favor of denying benefits to the homeless vets. Can you imagine? The outrage was so big they backed off right away. The president parades out one disabled vet a year to bullshit the public into thinking that we go all out for our boys. The reality is much different.

I'm so tired of our government. A move to Asia and non-involvement is looking better and better.

They have plenty of money to line the pockets of the defense contractors, but not enough to take care of vets. Shows you how corrupt the US really is."War is a racket." Was "in the area" so I thought to hit up star of light for a good start of the day. Service was as expected, some chitchat during the blow from both ladies. After the deed I wanted to get a drink for the road."whiskey and coke please". I repeated "cola and whiskey". They started mixing some gin / whiskey + coke brew in two glasses and giving me a bin for two 300bath(each!) lady drinks. Suddenly they didn't understand English and the cash lady got involved to sort it out. Then cashlady gave me a 200bath bin for everything when I was to leave. Sorted that out and left, must be low oxygen atmosphere in there or something.

This is a follow up to Natty Bumpo's very good reports on the Saphan Kwai area. I have been coming to Saphan Kwai for about the last 7 years. Started rather by accident when the first time I came to BKK I chose the Asha guesthouse to stay (yes, because it started with the letter A!). The Asha is unfortunately closed down now but I still love this area and so stay in the (ironically named) Nice Palace hotel. I love the area because it is fully Thailand and not a veritable island full of Aussies, kiwis, Brits, Yanks. My dear colleagues, I see all these every day of the year so let me have something different when I'm on holiday.

I agree with most everything Natty says about Saphan Kwai except the following. I have never been made to take a girl to a particular hotel. I have always taken them back to my hotel. The only time I had to use the short term hotel was when the girl didn't have an I'd and Asha wouldn't let her in. A sensible policy so I couldn't argue too much. The other point where my experience differs from Natty's is that LT in Saphan Kwai usually does mean all night. As with anywhere girls will sometimes try to get away early to spend their money or whatever. What is a LT can be negotiated with the mama / papa san if you're worried.

Prices are, as Natty noted, about 1,500 ST and 2,500 LT but there is quite a bit of variation. Sometimes a mamasan will ask double those prices, in a bar where I have previously had the normal rate. In that case, I head for the door, there are other bars that will charge the normal rate. I put this down to the fact they don't see farangs here much. And sometimes you can get less than the normal rate, eg 1,500 LT. This is usually at some of the smaller bars in the area. Note that there are some rough specimens in those smaller bars. One had hold of my arm last night and I was contemplating chewing the arm off to escape. But there is always the potential for a diamond in the rough in those smaller bars so I still look in.

I don't have much Thai so that's a challenge in Saphan Kwai although the mamasans usually have enough to get you a girl and extract your cash. I will often give the mamasan 100 baht tip as they are mostly pretty helpful. Have a few 20 baht notes in your pocket too to flick to the door boys who will badger you for something on the way out.

Final notes: 1) if you're staying at the Nice Palace (and who wouldn't haha) , the sour faced bloke on the desk will try to extract a few hundred baht from greenhorns bringing a girl back. Either smile and ignore it, flick him a 20 or take your room key out with you.

2) spend a bit of time at Saphan Kwai in daylight hours. There is great street food and some of the massage places are excellent (traditional but happy ending can be arranged and at least one will do FS)

3) I'm here now for a couple of nights if anyone wants to link up here.

Saphan Kwai is not for everyone but if you want a little roughage in your mongering diet then drop by for a look.

Looking to head to BKK for a short fun break over the Songkran break. Was just wondering how the New Year affects the bars in places like Soi Cowboy or Nana and if the various massage parlours / soapies are open or closed or short staffed if lots of people go to their hometowns or provinces during the holiday?

I've tried to RTFF but can't seem to find much on Songkran. Apologies if this question was brought up earlier.

The appeal was that it was peaceful and the people were very friendly. That was it. After just a few visits he and the other GIs were fucking the local girls; giving them small gifts; buying food for them; and giving them a few baht. Eventually the USA military deliberately turned it into a big brothel for the GIs. Of course the GIs also were going to Bangkok, which in the mid-sixties was also very different. This particular buddy of mine preferred Pattaya.

I was in Pattaya before, during, and after the Vietnam war. Except for the airman from U-tapao air base near Sattahip, Pattaya was little affected by the war. It was never turned into a brothel by Uncle Sam. That credit belongs to the Thai mafia from Cholburi who controlled (and still do) the sex trade in the area.

In Bangkok during the war there were 52 hotels (some like the Grace, Federal, and Miami are still in business) that belonged to a consortium organized by the US military and Tommy's Tours to take care of the troops. Rooms were $5 each. 24-hour bar / restaurant. A / C, pool, and liberal guest policy. There were 1, 000 R&R troops (including some women) in Bangkok at any given time. There were also about 50, 000 US Air Force personnel in Thailand. They did not get (or need) R&R. They were well taken care of the Isaan girls around Udorn, Korat, Ubon, etc.

The troops generally agreed that among the sites that were available for R&R (including Honolulu, and Sydney) Bangkok gave the best bang for the buck. Still does.

Personally I never use the word 'fun' and 'Songkran' in the same sentence. All I can say is that Songkran is better in Bangkok than Pattaya where it lasts 5 miserable days of being drenched by stupid drunk farangs.

Keep all you important valuables in plastic bags with seals against the water drenching. Watch out for flying ice. Its hard. Watch out for dirty water. Stay away from the crazy areas.

What do like about this area besides the lack of Farangs? Is there anything special about the girls or is it just the prices?

My writing was very sloppy. It does sound like I implied the US military was running a a bunch of brothels. I didn't mean to imply that. What I meant to imply was that everyone from the buck privates to the generals knew what was going on and was fine with it.

Honestly, if it were one day I would probably love it. Three days is overkill. Best place for Songkhran is MA or Sing. Anyplace they don't celebrate it.
