[QUOTE=Old Thai Hand] They are among the biggest gossips and back-stabbers, not-to-mention opportunists when someone with money is around. Her brother recently got married. Unfortunately he "married down" resulting in low-life riff-raff from his new wife's village showing up to eat all the food, drink all the booze and have their hands out repeatedly for more and more. Since my GF's family have money, all these people were quite brazen in asking for all manner of things. The bride's scum family contributed nothing to the proceedings and yet expected a sin sord of 130,000 + 3 baht of gold, far more than the girl, considering her status was worth.

Generally I would agree with what you say, but they are not all the same. And they very quickly realise who will not ignore their hands out approaches. Indeed you put your Isaan G/F on a pedestal, and there are many more like her. As for your G/F's brother marrying beneath him, that was no doubt his choice, and regardless of the price paid he was no doubt a happy man. (I say well done to him, presumbly going against the family's wishes - pity he didn't just offer the girl a better life, take it or leave it, with no sinsod or gold). Why does her status have to enter into it? She may have been from a poor family, but clearly she did not follow the masses to Bangkok and Pattaya, and earn a living in the bars, providing fodder for you, me and everyone else. It is the likes of us that lower a girls status, whether paying 300,500 or 1000's of baht for a night of sex and then you turn round and push it in their faces!
Yes all villages have their lazy scum who effectively gatecrash every party and eat and drink themselves silly. But that is the fault of the hosts - allowing them in in the first place. Bangkok too has it's high class scum - many of them - who show no consideration to others, believe it's only about money, and look down on all those have nots. Can you honestly say none of your well placed Hi-So "friends" are not also scumbags?
Sure, Isaan has its faults, just as Bangkok does, and no doubt every other country in the world. But just as in Bangkok, a farang living in Isaan is free to pick and choose whom he mixes with, and who to invite and who to exclude from his own social events.. In my little corner of Isaan, the scumbags do not bother me, and I have a good life.
