When it comes to medical treatment for a serious illness what it means is that you're going to get what you pay for. Which, if it's free, is not likely to be the absolute best care available. Like in other countries with universal healthcare, ask upper middle class citizens and above how many of them rely only upon what's available for free. Hell a lot of them would be willing to leave their own countries to go somewhere else for treatment. I say if you can afford insurance then you should get it and avoid putting your hard earned wealth at risk. But if you can't afford it, then do what you can do, and be thankful if there are services available for free or at a very low cost.
