Of course it will just be BKK and the beach areas that explode in price. Chiang Mai and other ports north will probably be ok. I do think Burma will have an effect. Also Vietnam. If Thailand does not get its shit together soon, it might just lose out.

A dude I know has a good relationship with the mamasan and she sends gals that she believes are his spec over to his place. He has had to send more than one back after having a look at their IDs.

It is the world's most populous nation; and China one child policy coupled with families strong desire to make sure that one child was a male has created a tremendous disparity in the numbers of men and women.

More revealing are average wages by country. The International Labour Organization (ILO) , a United Nations agency, estimates Purchasing Power Parity adjusted average monthly wages (expressed in US$) in countries around the world. Luxembourg ranks #1 at $4089; the USA is #4 at $3263; Germany is #13 at $2720; and China is #57 at $656. It will be some time, if ever, before China's wages catch up with North America and Western Europe.

There will be more Chinese tourists than tourists from any other single nation. Given it's proximity Thailand will see larger and larger numbers of Chinese tourists. The world constantly changes.

No one alive today will ever see China become the world's #1 economy. They are a house of cards; they are losing farm land that can grow food that people can actually eat at an alarming rate. They look good on paper but look at what the build, one small earth quake and everything falls apart. Time is going to show what a piece of crap China is. You may be too young to remember when 'Made in Japan' was a joke, now 'Made in China 'is even worse. If The USA gets people like Obama out and moves back to rewarding business for successes and stops social engineering, watch out world.

One could argue whether this will happen by 2015 or 2016; but it will happen.

China has severely degraded it's environment as it has pushed its economy to grow; but it is starting to transition to a service based economy, driven by internal consumption. One of the consequences is plants and factories that are major polluters are being shut down. The Chinese are well aware of the problems with their environment and are determined to do something about them.

The Chinese are not using the advanced construction techniques you see in Japan and earthquake prone regions in the USA; but look at what happens in Latin America when there is an earthquake. There is massive movement of people from the Chinese countryside to cities. China is evolving from a rural country into an urban country. There has been tremendous pressure on its construction industry. The work has been done shoddily and on the cheap; but as China becomes wealthier its society will demand improvements in the quality of the built environment and the quality of construction will improve.

In a few decades China has made an astonishing economic leap. Rapid growth is not without pain.

Given the size of its population, one would expect China to have the world's largest domestic economy. However, there are other ways to measure a country's economic success. One way is to measure the global economic activity of a nation. If this measure is used, China, and every other country in the world lags behind the USA. In the 21st Century this is a better measure of a countries economic prowess. It's not just how much business you do at home that is important. How much business you do globally is more important. At this time it is difficult to see when, if ever, China will pass the USA in global economic activity.

Your remark about how "Made in Japan" once stood for shoddy products is a good point; but it would seem to argue against the point you are trying to make. At the end of WWII Japan desperately turned out poorly made, inexpensive products. That was not a goal. That was a means to an end. Traditionally the Japanese take great pride in their ability to take something and make it better. Today Japan makes some of the best products in the world. Someday China may also be known for high quality manufacturing. Only the future will tell.

Western787's point was how Thailand will be overrun with Chinese tourists, which coupled with the shortage of young women in China will inflate prices in the P4P scene. That may very well happen. Also, after China develops a mature consumption driven economy, it will be a vast export market for surrounding countries, which will boast those economies. In another decade Thailand's economy could be booming, driven by exports to China. This may have an even bigger impact on Thailand's P4P industry.

I've been traveling for a long time. 75% of it has been Europe. There's very few countries I haven't stepped foot in and many like Italy, France, and England dozens of times. Years back you would see very few Asian, and the Chinese were the minority of that few. The last time I was in Europe I spent three weeks wandering Italy. The Chinese were everywhere. Mostly in groups. Large groups. I'm not sure if this is the way they travel or a way of cutting costs. I was amazed at the number of groups that I saw. I have a 25 year old Chinese girl here that I do once a week. Spinner and a lot of fun. She's a student and making a little spending money. She also does guided tours for a local Chinese tour company. Groups of eight. They don't spend a lot on hotels as they are staying in an obscure suburb that's not really convenient to anything.

The one thing that I have seen in my travels is that for the most part they are very demanding people. My Chinese girl is very GFE with me but I met her when she was going through a rough time here and I was able to help her and be a shoulder, so she has a little bit of a aft spot for me. Other than that she's also all business and very demanding. When we go out for Chinese food she's all over the waiters. Almost embarrassing. I'm guessing the men are the same if not worst. Only male child? There's some spoiling going on there for sure. Not sure that this type of attitude will go over well with the girls in BKK. They think us faring are demanding. I think the Koreans and Japanese are much more even tempered and polite. I'm not worried about being pushed out of the game by the Chinese. And if it does happen I'll adapt.

Didn't I see a headline featuring a photo of a Chinese woman sightseeing in another Asian country helping her small child have a bowel movement on a busy sidewalk? The explanation is probably that the woman was from a town where this was often the only way one could relieve oneself. As the Chinese become more seasoned travelers, they will learn; hell, even the American's learned! My apologies to the Canadians who are also from America, and no one ever complains about them.
