According to the local paper a company has promised to start a public bus that would run from the airport down to the bottom of the island with stops in Phuket Town, Patong, etc. The maximum fare would be a maximum 150 for the complete route. It is to start in March.

However, the company has refused to disclose its name because it is afraid of the taxi "mafia" (their term). In the past the taxis have managed to stop most reasonably priced options and Phuket is the only region of Thailand without a proper public transportation system. In an effort to convince the taxi drivers to permit the service the bus company has said that they are aiming at local residents who need an affordable bus system but the buses will have space for luggage so I doubt the taxi drivers will buy that argument.

Everybody except the taxi drivers is for the service and there were calls to provide police protection to prevent attacks.

Unless you are moving on to greener pastures, there used to be a handful of bars on the main soi leading into the beach and pier area of Chalong. As you are going towards the pier on your way in some of the bars were 2 or 3 blocks right of that main entry soi and some were right on the soi. The choices weren't great but you could get pussy. I have not been there for a couple of years though so maybe they are gone now. I'd be surprised if that were true though.

Really though, if you want to monger get out of Phuket. If you want a beach and sea going experience Phuket can work but culturally it is definitely the asshole of Thailand.

I was last there and used it about 6 months ago. It rolls past Tesco and HomePro and ends up at the old bus station in old Phuket Town. It cost 50 baht or less. I don't recall exactly.

While I was walking around on the main road in Patong beach there were 3 massage places next to eachother and opposite and fairly close to Chiristines massage place. Currently, there are reasonably priced minibuses from the airport to most towns and there are public buses from most towns to Phuket town. However, there is no public bus system between the towns other than Phuket town. This new service would allow one to travel between any of the towns on the route. Patong to Karon, for example, that are not currently served except by the taxis. Prices for individual segments weren't released but from Patong to Karon would probably something like 40 (or less) versus 400.

I arrived today. The hawkers inside the airport at Phuket were the worst I have ever seen. I had 10 approach me. Asking 800 to 1000 B for taxi to Patong. One guy grabbed my arm. I almost popped him one. Very aggressive.

If you take one of these, there is a great chance you will be with others in a van. Then, they will stop at a gem shop or more likely a travel agency. I made the mistake my first time and it took 2 hours to get to Patong.

This is my suggestion: Walk past these AH's out the exit, look to your right, and go to the Yellow "Taxi Meter" booth.

But when you get there, do not just ask for a taxi. Because sometimes they will put you with a driver who also will stop at a gem shop or travel agency. Tell the girl you want to go directly to Patong and you do not want to stop anywhere. Be very clear about this.

The price should be 500 B. I got to Patong in 40 minutes today.

It cost 180 be and took 1 hour and 40 minutes. Someone on the bus bought a tour at the stop and took a good 20 minutes to complete her transaction. However, I had plenty of time and didn't mind the slow pace.
