What passes for fun like most of what goes on is simple and uncomplicated. Singing, dancing, playing music and getting together for celebrations of one kind or another. For the kids it's running around and playing. Obviously if there is an internet connection browsing and game playing will feature. And don't forget the home made hooch although I hear the hangovers can be severe.

As to ego and self-esteem. For me these are not overly relevant in village society. These are I suggest are more attuned to our urbanized competitive materialistic world. There are divisions within the village, the elected headman stands out as I imagine do families who have built modern homes with remittances from their sons and daughters but I don't believe villagers view each other by how much they have but by their character and how they behave.

I don't mean to argue with you Linylo but putting it bluntly for me it's just not OK to describe where these people live as shitholes and I cannot understand why anybody would want to.

Last time I was in town, admittedly it was low season, the beer bars were deserted of girls and customers.

It must be a failing business model as the previous visit maybe 10 years ago there were many more bars with huge complexes along Beach Road holding litterally thousands of girls. I didn't see any of that earlier this year.
