After reading mixed reviews, but nearly unanimous comments about attractive saree-clad girls at Orchid near Lalson, I decided to give them a try. First of all as noted by Randy69:
Just walk down the little side street beside Lalson's until you come to Marine Drive and you'll see it on the left. I first made the mistake of going upstairs above Lalson's where I found a small Chinese spa. I said I was looking for Orchid and they insisted that, yes, they are Orchid. When it was clear I didn't believe them they admitted they are not Orchid, but I can get a good massage there.
Walking on down the side street toward Marine Drive I finally came to the real Orchid, which was obvious once I entered. As others have mentioned, there is a wide variety of providers (it would be generous or disrespectful to call them girls considering the age of some) of all ages and sizes. I spotted one petite, young one with a very nice smile and was ready to go. Then came the menu. Everything was priced in dollars, and the receptionist told me their basic body massage is $45 (or 6,500 if I wanted to pay rs.) I told her my friends said it is possible to get basic massage for rs. 1,500; she acted indignant and I left in search of a more honest deal. Is this a typical "foreigner" premium at Orchid or did they just think I looked rich, naive and horny? (I am neither of the first two, but on the last one I will plead guilty.) On the up side I found an acceptable alternative within walking distance. Report to follow.
Dual pricing is a disgraceful practice adopted by most Sri Lankan spas, not all.
