There is definitely a shortage of highly skilled staff in Thailand, especially those who can speak English. I would also think that the high end hotels, bars and restaurants probably pay their staff reasonably well so they are unlikely to be in the P4 P scene. My guess would be that although Thailand has low unemployment it is probably well above 1%, and there is probably a lot of underemployment, people doing jobs to make ends meet rather than jobs they are qualified to do. Can't they get a good job there? I suspect that many restaurants are not that busy and not looking for staff. Hair dressing and beauty businesses everywhere are struggling.

I know that many outdoor food places in Chiang Mai are wanting to pay such low money that they try to get girls from Burma more so than Thais. Age discrimination is an issue here. A big one. It is difficult to get a job over 40, but with a rapidly aging population that might not be the case for much longer.

Thailand has begged for the Cambodians and Burmese laborers to come back. Why? There is not enough labor without them. Construction projects are delayed at time due to too few workers. This might change depending on how the Junta proceeds. The economy could take a hit.

And I would say the lower Sukhumvit area and the workers therein are a very poor yardstick of what is going on in the country, and not even a good measure of Bangkok. Get out into the rest of the city and restaurants are filled with Thai folks nightly. Most of the places we frequent are busier than ever. I have even had to start booking a table at my favorite Isaan place in Din Daeng. There are fewer tourists for sure, but as I said, it is only 6% of GDP.

My gal has a couple of cousins from families that are quite poor but they have managed to get loans, get through school (one has just completed her Masters), and are making good money. The opportunity and jobs are there. All you have to do is want it and work.

Construction pays a minimum of 300 baht a day plus OT to Thai workers, plus most live in metal housing near the site that is very low cost. With OT they are making close to 15 k a month. Normally both the wife and the hubby work. So that is 30 k. Not bad for uneducated folks. Many save, buy land, or other businesses.

Hell, street food vendors do quite well. Start doing the math. Most pay about 5 k or less for their spot. One dude in our area who sold North food was netting an average of 4 k per day. He is now retired and back in Chiang Rai on his paid for farm.

It is amazingly easy for a Thai to start a business here. And quite cheap. Entrepreneurial Thais do very well. Too bad the same opportunity is not granted to foreigners here. If so most of us could make a killing.
